What type of filter you use in the sump?

I use a filter sock like this one : http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=EA1351

I have about 20 of them and change them every other day...a real PITA. Then I wash them in the washing machine when all of them are "used up". I have recently built a better bubble trap to remove the sock/mechanical filter all together. I guess I will just clean detritus off the bottom of the bubble trap as needed.

I don't use anything at all in my sump besides a bag of carbon I hang in there and my skimmer. I basically just rely on good husbandry for whatever is left behind by my skimmer and have come down to vaccuming the sump weekly when doing my water changes. Works well for me:)

Much of the particles that exist in the water are food for different things in the tank. Detritus is covered in bacteria which is a main staple for corals.

Mechanical filtration is much more effective at caputureing them than all the little polyps/hands on the corals.

i just reread this post - GBR you wash these in the washing machine? Without soap i am assuming?

I think I will use the filter sock and start vaccuming the sump. I have some live rocks in my sump, so the detritus may come from there. Do you recommend to put the spare live rock in sump?

Thanks for all the replys.

My sump only uses a hang on canister with carbon in it. My pump came today for my skimmer so that will be going in soon. I don't use any type of sponge or sock. Once a month or so I siphon the junk off the bottom of the sump. Works great for me.
