I posted a thread sometime ago about a new 350 gallon pentagon I am putting in.

Well, it still hasn't been set up yet due to a lack of a stand/canopy. I have the tank sitting in the middle of my garage along with the custom sump, lighting, Bubble King skimmer, pump, plumbing parts, reef ceramics, RO/DI, auto-topoff stuff and misc other stuff. This has all been sitting there since early June (some of it early May).

The stand/canopy are part of a long, sad situation. I was having Chris Crow build it for me. He is a great guy with a very understanding, patient wife. I am just losing that patience.

Chris started it in late April hoping to have it done in June. Well, a lot of things happened with work and he did not get much time to work on it after getting most of it done. He asked for a transfer and received it without much notice so he was driving 6 hours back and forth every week for a while until he decided to just move to his new location. He has been having housing issues ever since (none of it really his fault) August. He is in a very rural area so housing is a real issue. Now, he is having issues with even getting someone that will build this time of year so it looks like Spring. It is not a good situation for him and if I were in his shoes, my tank and canopy would be pretty far down the list of priorities. All his stuff was put into storage, except his woodworking stuff, which was left six hours away in his old workshop. Nothing has been done in months on the stand/canopy. He can not give me any definite date when I might get it either.

In the meantime, my wife is on my back to get this stuff out of the garage and she is real close to just saying forget the new tank.

Anyone know of any way to solve this dilemma or have suggestions on what I should do. The reason I went with Chris in the first place was because doing it locally was going to take 8 months and cost twice as much.

The bad thing is that if either one of us (myself or Chris) would have known about this, we wouldn't have done it this way. What's worse is that it takes days, sometimes a week to get in touch with him.

I like Chris and don't want to screw him over, but I can't be expected to wait forever. Would it be reasonable to tell him I have to have it by Christmas or I will be going a different route? Problem with that is that to start over locally will take months...

What do I do?

Looks like a water cooler discussion but,

If plan B costs twice as much, I would level with him and then offer him a nice $ bonus to get it done and out of his hair by your desired completion date. If he passes, know that he can not fulfill the agreement and then look for alternate cabinet makers.

Thats a tough one. I'd find out how far along he is. Maybe its close enough for you or a local to just finish off as is. May be a win/win for both of you.

I did that over a month ago, offerred him twice what he thought to get it to me at a certain date. It's not a money issue, it's a space issue as he says he has no place local to work on it.

If I ever get back in touch with him (been trying for three days), I am going to go through a bunch of alternatives I have thought up.

1. I'll pay for a storage unit for two months locally (or as close as you can get it) for you to work in. The storage unit would have to allow that, not sure on that point.

2. Same as above, but for temp workshop.

3. I'll pay you to take vacation time, travel back to Seattle and finish it in a week.

4. Send it to me as-is and I'll find someone locally to finish it. That kind of depends on how far along he is. Supposedly, he only has a couple days work on it before it is ready to start the finishing process. I have already found someone that will finish it locally, but they only do the staining/finishing, not woodwork.

I'm just getting tired of the excuses, no matter how valid they are or who's fault it is.

OK, here will be the ultimate test for Chris.

I have found a storage unit 15 miles away from where he lives in rural Oregon that is 10'x20' with access to power that knows what he will use it for and is OK with that. It should only take Chris another month, at most to finish the project. I have offerred him (via voicemail) to pay for the unit for 6 months which should be about when his new shop would be done.

So, I can think of no real, legitimate excuse for him not to do this. If he refuses, I will have to go elsewhere.

We'll see what he says. I am going to hound him until I get to talk to him. Being in a rural area, acess to cell service (which is all he has) is very sporadic and limited.
