I shot some tank pics of my new zoo's today and didn't want to wait for the MHs to come on so these pics are all taken with actinic lighting only. For each shot I took RAW + JPEG. The first pic is JPEG straight from the camera only resized. The second is the RAW photo adjusted for white balance, exposure levels, and some sharpening. I know some folks have been interested in what the advantages are by taking digital photographs in RAW mode if your camera has that feature. I think this is a good example of the power of RAW and some fairly simple postprocessing.

very kewl pictures dood :). even your aptasia looks kewl  .

Yeah that came on the rock I put in last night. Are you sure that is what they are? I have three of them on there and I was going to blast them today if people chimed in and confirmed they were indeed Aptasia. They are kind of a nice green though ha, ha. Not the brownish green I am used to.

they sort of do and i thought that you were just adding color to them :p:lol:.
well if they're the rare aptasia you can name them Markylicious aptasiasus :D:lol: and sell them for 100 per polyp.

ROFL!!:p Nice pics Mark! I need to try raw right out of my camera and see how it comes out! Maybe when I get a tank:shock:

Raw straight out of the camera will not look much different than the JPEG, in fact in some cases, depending on the camera... the JPEG will look better because of the in-camera postprocessing such as AWB, sharpening. To unleash the power of RAW you must post process using a program such as Photoshop or in this case I just used DPP software that comes with Canon DSLRs. A great piece of software I might add and much simpler and of course much, much cheaper than Photoshop.

another reason why i choose to not believe anything in pictures in this hobby.

great examples.
what camera are you shooting with?

:D They are bright green under the actinics only... but I am sure I am not so lucky. I actually did not adjust colors, only exposure levels and white balance. Under the 10K they are not as bright green and have a tinge of brown so you are probably right.

Thank you. Sushi... you are so right! I could have done some color enhancement other than the white balance and completely changed the colors. I also did not adjust the saturation which is an easy way to make something vivid that isn't. These are actually quite colorful. I tried to make the photos look as they do to my eye.

This is the reason to always shoot in RAW if the camera has the ability, it leaves a good margin for error in white balance among other things. Good shots.

I know but I just had to hear your response

LOL!!:D.
