right now i have carbon in a mesh bag in front of the return from the sump. i was thinking if i put it inside the EuroReef skimmer it would have a lot more forced flow through it. or maybe not. is this a bad idea?

I have been putting mine in a filter bag attached to the drain from the overflow into the sump. It is very easy to get to and change that way.

Yeah, I wouldn't put it in the skimmer... you could cause a number of problems, from just being a pain to get to, flooding it, or even possibly breaking your skimmer... so, unless you know what you're doing and have a good plan that won't cause problems or get in the way of efficiency in your skimmer, I'd leave it the way you got it.
Carbon is a good idea, but not as important as quality skimming.

Yea I wouldnt put it in the skimmer either. Best way is to have it on or around the drain line into the sump, that way it get the most raw water.

Unless you have a prizam pro deluxe with the carbon holder basket for the exit of the skimmer I would not do that either.
