A clouple of my big brown mushrooms are closing up and putting out a bunch of white thread like filaments from the center. Does any one know what's going on?

Cheryl

Hello Cheryl and welcome to Reef Frontiers.
I have had a few shrooms do this when they were stressed due to shipping or getting bumped while rearrangeing my tank. Mine have always pulled out of it.
Oh, another time when I fragged some I had a couple do that. I hate fragging shrooms its like I can hear them screaming "NO NOT THE RAZOR BLADE!" LOL!
Is your salinity high?
They hate high salinity as well.

In my experience that means they are splitting. I am moving this thread because it has nothing to do w/ zoo's

the filaments are indeed most always stress induced as Maui has pointed out. That doesnt mean its the end for them though. Hardly so... some are easily stimulated to issue the "threads" from handling, shipping, water quality (temp or salinity straying, etc).

Please do a full scale of tests to your water quality and then do a large water change (when in doubt, do a water change!).

With reef-quality water (Calcium 350+ ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, pH over 8.3, etc), you should see this behavior subside in just a day or two. Truly no worries :)

I just found this thread, and I too had some mushrooms do this in my tank (white threads being expelled). The species in questions, as closely as I could ID them was Rhodactis indosinensis.

The rock I bought was completely covered in these mushrooms, it took about a week for them to all disintergrate:(. I drip aclimitize all my new additions over an hour to 2 hour period. I have only got a roughly 2-3 polyps left... I also did a largish waterchange, but to no avail. Nothing had changed with regards to my water parameters and none of my other corals were affected. The remaining 'shrooms seem to be pulling through. This event happened over a month ago.
