Why all of a sudden...

like how brown? Have you lost some Cerith's or other sand sifters? Change in water movement? Just a couple of questions.

How new are your bulbs. I believe as bulbs age they can change spectrum which can cause algea growth.

Tanks also go through different cycles over time so it is normal. Also, if there is an increase in excess nutrients etc, it can also cause cycles of algae which in this case sounds like diatoms

What is your temp? I was told anything over 82 will cause this.

I am having this diatom explosion myself right now. The sand looks like crap!! It will clear up.

The sand has spots of dark brown, nothing has dies as far as I know. Temp is 78, bulbs are only about 6 months old.
