Will 2012 Bring Some New Break Through's in the Hobby?

Looking back, the hobby has evolved quite a bit over the years. The introduction of wet/dry filters back in the day was a big hit just as was the introduction of equipment like protein skimmers. Lighting has changed drastically as well from the regular flourescent bulbs we use to use to Metal Halides that made it possble to keep pretty much anything you wanted in your tank. If that wasn't enough, L.E.D's come along now, using less electricity and producing a lot less heat that allows you to achieve the same thing so what do you guys think? Will this year be the year that we have some new break through in the hobby that changes the game totally or do you think it will be the same old thing?

I don't see how it can't get better Krish, seems all the major improvements are built on what happens on reef sites, we not only grow corals and fish.. we grow whole industries! and yet with all the improvements we are still living with the dinosaur called an aquarium heater, seriously how hard can it be to build a fail safe heater? an extra 25 cents for overheat protection? Maybe this will be the year of the heater lol

I'm with Sas here, how is it that we don't have or have not demanded a better/safer heating instrument. In nearly 30 years now of reefkeeping my two worst disasters are both because of failed heaters. My new system is now hooked up to an Apex unit for redundancy and will have it sound alarm for when to hot or cold but seems a failsafe heater should not be that costly or difficult to produce.

Well really it is a $500 controller for my DIY LED lighting but will also control most everything else as a bonus. When I initially looked into the Pac Sun LED units and broke down the build cost of system they were about $1300 just for thier controller that only controlled thier lighting units. This was the deciding moment to go DIY. So now that I finally have a controller will try and take full advantage of it, though like my Smart Phone may never have the upper hand on either... lol
