I am going through 10-15 gallons of R/O water every 4 weeks. Translates to about $7.50 along with dragging my toddler to the lfs, three trips. Mind you I don't have a problem with the whole process but this comes out to $90 a year along with gas etc. I do not have a metered account for water. With overall operating costs (replacement filters) if you were in my shoes, is running my own unit say a 35 gallon, more cost effective? Bigger hassle then running out to the lfs? Lastly, any suggestions on a smaller output unit. Thanks in advance, Mike.

GREAT guys, did me right, and even sent me something for free, (after they sent the wrong thing) BUt i highly recommend them
i bought the ocean reef+2 RoDI system, came with everything i needed to make it work (i bought a new perce vavle) (you will also need movement heat and O2)
i used, the WON 150watt heater, a aqua clear 70 head, (for movment) and a bubbler with air stone, i went to target, and bough my self, a 45 gallon containor (20 bucks or less) set the containor on a little pad, (so its not on the ground) put holes for the air tubes,

on the other side of that wall, is the inlet from the well, it goes,
well,( from the well is plastic) to a presure tank (turns to copper at the T) after that it turns placis ageain, then it goes though the wall, to the water softer, witch is that big stand up thing, from here, it goes copper ageain, to the water heater.... inbetween the water softer, and the water heater is where my perce vavle is, the ro unit has a on off switch, (the inlet side of the on-off has water in it all the time) after that is where the water comeing in TDS sensor is. then it goes, though all 5 off the cans and out to the tank. This is were the filterd water is tested, the 2nd TDS sensor, is here and after the auto switch ,
i got the auto switch only so when i take a gallon or 2 out, i can turn it on, and not worrie about it overfilling if i wall away. but i dont recommend leaveing the water on to the ro tank all the time, or for any plumming in that case.
when the valve turns off cause its full, the water backs up in the DI cartregde's (witch i think is bad, cause with out the switch it will drain all out)

I was doing the same thing for my 20 gallon reef a few years back. Got old in a hurry. I went and bought the Typhoon 5 Stage Reef Keeper RO/DI system from Airwaterice.com
Good price and great customer service.
Personally, i would suggest a 75 gal per day unit. The membranes are universal, and the 75 gal per day units offer the highest rejection rate, 99%. 100 gal per day units only reject 90% of TDS. I found the Airwaterice units to be less expensive than the other frequently sold units, Kent Maxxima/Oceanus etc....$200.00 got me the 5 stage unit, all hardware to installation, and a spare set of filters...shipped. If I were doing it again, I'd have gone with the whole house unit which comes with 3 gallon tank for home RO use. Ourt water here tastes terrible so we use Brita filters...Wife doesnt like the idea of drinking "fish water"

mines the 75, gpd. but a thing i learned is the temp of the water entering the rodi unit will determine the ammount of water being made.
if you can get like 70 degree water entering the systme, your system will be able to process water faster.
in my case, does, matter cause that a 45 gal container. my tankg only 30 gal, i got thought about 1 gallon every day, top off, depending on the temp and humidy of the room
Ive also took a super intrest in contoling the rooms temp and humidy i maintain 73-71 and 48%-53% humindy
it makes the tank lose less water
