    Question about old live rock...

Great idea! I am always thinking of ways to clean the detritus out of my sump. I've used the handheld vacume, but this is not strong enough. Have you tried putting the bottle on the intake of a bigger pump like an Iwaki 70? I was thinking of doing this in my sump when I clean it. It would only...

    Spawning clowns: What to do.

About two weeks ago I noticed my clowns laid a small carpet of eggs under their RBTA. The color changed from a bright orange to a dark red. Has anyone had this experience? Is there a chance the eggs will survive and hatch? Can I do anything to help them?

    My giant clam is dying!

I have a similar type of tank and just lost a Derasa as well. My other two clams (maxima) were fine. I discovered that my salinity was way low (1.022). I normally keep it at 1.026. This happened over the summer when I was not paying a lot of attention to the tank. I kept emptying the skimmer and...

dolomite for calcium reactors to boost magnesium

Are you still dosing this way, or did you find something else to put in your calcium reactor?

Crazy Question: Anyone never test their water?

I do the same as you with my 220. I used to test all the time (as newbies should), but after time I could recognize how the corals were doing. However, I just ordered three of the Hanna testers because of how easy they appear to be to use. I am looking at starting some difficult corals, so I...

    Leather coral 'rotting out'

I never had a problem with the green emerald crabs eating a coral. I too had a hard time keeping them alive over long periods. I don't think they have enough to eat in the tanks and maybe that is why it started munching on my coral.

Reef safe acrylic scratch removal and cleaners

Helpful hint: If you find wet sandpaper in the right grit, get a bunch of it. I used the sponge from a previous scratch kit and pre-cut the sandpaper to fit the sponge. I then used super glue gel to attach the sandpaper. It makes sanding much easier as you don't have to squeeze the sandpaper to...

    Pod Population

If you grow the pods in some sort of media, can they make there way to the DT from the sump (through circulation pumps) with success, or do you need to shake the media out in the DT to feed the fish?

    How much chaeto?

When you first put the Chaeto in the sump, how did you secure it, or does it just float around?

    Leather coral 'rotting out'

I had the same thing happen to my green finger leather. It took a while, but I finally saw the emerald crab (red) feeding on it at night. I had a heck of a time catching the crab!

    New DIY LED build

Wow! Great information. Is this up and running. Also, did you use marine grade (tinned wire) for the build? Just something to consider for a DIYer. Over time the copper in household wire (not tinned) would start to corrode creating resistance and heat and eventually failing-a shame for the...

    Crazy Algae Growth

tat2Z: To clarify: Because of the leeching from the rock, the hair algae was going to grow regardless. It took the phosphate reactor several months to catch up. If I did not have a cantalope sized brain coral that survived, I would have kept the lights off to expedite the process. What I noticed...

    LED lights?

I was talking to another reef member who had Radion's. He advised I needed an open hood due to the Radion's having a fan on the bottom that sucks air up through the electronics. He said the salt air eventually eroded the electronics because of the salty air that accumulated in his closed hood...

    Alkalinity ?

Test kits can go bad, or like what happened to me once-you purchase it from the store and it is already bad. You might want to have your local fish store test the water as well to confirm your results.

    Coral Bleaching

One other thing to try-I put some miracle mud in my refugium. I initially put it in as a place for bacteria and critters to live. I had a couple of SPS that had died off, or so I thought. I started noticing them coming back after the mud. It has been about five months and both SPS have regained...

    Crazy Algae Growth

I have not heard of hair algae spreading/attaching after you break it up. It needs nutrients to grow. I had a major die-off when my chiller broke while I was on vacation. I have a 220 with the rock set up just the way I like it. I did not want to take it apart. I did not realize it would take me...

    Crazy Algae Growth

Until you get the hair algae under control, you can use an electric car wheel detailing tool. You can use it under water and it comes with several tools that you can use in the crevices of the rocks. I ended up going to the tool after knocking down several corals when I attempted to scrub the...
