    Will an emerald crab eat...

Will an emerald crab eat Halimedia or Sargassum? And also, if I allready have a banded coral shrimp in the tank, is one going to kill the other?

    Help me identify these plants

Thanks everyone. As far as the second one, I have no clue as to where it came from for absolute sure, but I was told fiji.

Setting up a 100 gallon FOWLR, first aquarium

Looks like quite the gear you have started out with. Jumping right into a 100 gallon with halides... you should be ok after you do your research. I don't know about the weight, but you should be able to figure out the structural integrity after a few phone calls. All live rock is not created...

    Help me identify these plants

Hi all, these plants hitched into my tank, and now they have grown quite big. The first one, oddly enough, turns almost white at night, and after the lights come on, it gets green again. The second one resembles some kind of kelp.

    Huge bubble algea

Here's an even better shot- and also I am trying to get my photo compression quality figured out

    Huge bubble algea

I pulled this out of my tank today, it was time to get rid of it before it pops and spreads everywhere. Second picture turned out to be a cool abstract shot.

    I got rid of them!!!

I got some needles today: I tried the super concentrated salt solution and a super concentrated buffer mix. I think the buffer is working. I don't have kalk so I am trying this first. I am also trying boiling water, but damn those aps just suck into the rock so fast they seem to just dissapear.

    RODI units...

hehe, yeah, "mistake". I think I figured out something after my second call today- they change 3 times as much for sewer as water in non-summer months- they figure all the water you pipe in(and pay for) ends up going down the drain(to the sewer). So all the water I use for evaporation, and all...

    RODI units...

OK, so after getting off the phone with the water poeple(who were jerks BTW) I figured out that there is no way the water bill I got last time was caused by the R/O unit being left on. Here is how the water costs break down: $2.53 per 100 cubic feet that means 753 gallons per 100 cubic feet...

    RODI units...

One of my older refrence books suggests a good way to get water is to go to the beach, fill up watertight contianers in your car, drive them back to your house, chlorinate the water, dechlorinate it, and then use it. Now thats how you save some $$. =-)

    RODI units...

After looking in the sump today, I have decided that even the little bit of non-r/o water I used in the last 2 weeks made a huge increase in the hair algea. I guess the only thing that really made the r/o water overly expensive is when I left it on overnight. At about 100 GPD, that makes it...

    RODI units...

My main issue in switching over to non-ro/di water for a while is the huge $$ cost of all that rejected water. It takes 6-7 gallons of waste water to get about 1 gallon of r/o water on my system, which is about 6 months old. I haven't worked a day in 2 months and have less then 100 bucks to my...

    RODI units...

Here is a question I have been pondering: My TDS reading for my tap water here in ballard is 30-45 last time I checked. Some fellow reefers here have made some good arguments that RO water is really not neccesary. Feedback?

How to transport an existing aquarium?

I use a 55 gallon (trash bin from home depot) that I fill up with r/o water a day or 2 before hand, and heat it up so I can just pump that water right in after its reached the proper salinity. I only use about 15 gallons of the old water. I use coolers to transport the liverock and whatever...

    Hair Algea on coral

Whats odd is that I barley put any food in my tank, I have one eel and one damsel. However, water changes have been rare in recent times due to lack of $$. The reef is more like a lagoon i'm afraid. I just wish I could get the algea off that one chunk of unidentifed branch coral.

    I cant keep mushrooms. Why?

It looks much too bright IMO. It looks to me as if there is not enough rock in the tank total. Did you say it was 18" deep? my best mushrooms grow withen spaces between rocks, sometimes at angles and near overhangs. My bigest one grew like crazy in a 20 gallon tall, right dead center at about...

    I got rid of them!!!

I also have been just using a sewing tweezers, (made of stainless steel and very sharp and pointy) to simply grap and yank them out. But you need to be quick, think "snatch the chocolate from my hand grasshopper".

    Hair Algea on coral

When those huge zebra turbo snails are working they do a great job, but it seems they spend alot of time just resting.
