    diy phosphate media reactor

I tried to get a pic showing the movement of the media, but it's difficult. This one came out the best. If you look at the left bottom of the inner tube you can see the ROWAphos perking up. It's kind of like a slow boil.

    diy phosphate media reactor

The reactor I made seemed to be working find so I made one with a clear body so I can see what's going on inside. I used 4 1/2" o.d. extruded acrylic. Here's what it looks like:

Tacky Question, How much do you spend on your hobby per year?

I recently made a list of basic items required over the course of a year (bulbs, filters, carbon, test kits, kalk powder, RO/DI carts, salt, etc) and it totalled about $1,200. That doesn't include any new equipment, electricity, livestock or emergency replacements. So I voted $1,000 to $2,000...

    DIY Nilsen Reactor project

Thanks wanareef I'm trying to find a 1/4" pipe tap. The 1/4" tap at the local hardware is 1/4-20 and I believe pipe thread is 1/4-18. Can anyone confirm that and suggest a place to buy such a critter? I found one online, but they had a $25 minimum order--the tap was only $5 FWIW-- I'm going...

What are your helpful plumbing hints?

Absolutely!!! If you must have a bend in the line on the intake side of the pump, makes sure it is at least a distance of 10 times the diameter of the pipe from the pump. (Lesson learned the hard way  )

    DIY Nilsen Reactor project

Thanks everyone. Sounds like the Weld-on 40 is the adhesive to use. Any input on the dosing method/equipment? TIA :)

    DIY Nilsen Reactor project

Okay, I'm getting ready to build a Nilsen kalk reactor and need some input. I have 4 1/2" o.d. acrylic tubing which I plan to use with pvc fittings. This will not have a magnetic stirrer, but a pump to stir the kalk. Questions-- 1. Some plans show the fittings threaded into the body and...

    diy phosphate media reactor

Thanks reeffan, I did get it to seal, but I wasn't comfortable leaving it running while I wasn't home, so....I shopped around until I finally found a cap (it's actually called a plug I think) made out of pvc and made a new top. It's working great, but the Weldon 40 tip is good for future...

    Good to know--thanks

    diy phosphate media reactor

Thanks Zeph. I got it hooked up and running and it works fine. I had a little problem with the fittings I put intp the cap leaking. The cap isn't pvc--it's maybe nylon or something and the pvc cement didn't work nor did the Weldon 16; however I finally got it sealed up with good ole super glue.

    diy phosphate media reactor

Thanks Curt. Looks like I can use Weld-on 1802. Now can someone tell me if pvc is the right size to fit on acrylic tubes? Or will I have to use acrylic for the base and top?

    Phosphate Reactor Flow Rate Question?

reeffan' I also found this in the ROWAphos directions "When placed in the canister it is possible to measure zero phosphate leaving the canister, the flow should be turned down until that is achieved " I'm not really sure what that means. Maybe it should read--the flow should be turned down...

    Phosphate Reactor Flow Rate Question?

The recommended flow rate through the TLF Phosban reactor is 80 to 90 gph. Since you can see the media, I think I would just adjust it visually. You want to have it moving, but not tumbling around too vigorously, as it will break it down. Nice looking unit. HTH
