My 90G starphire/rimless cube build thread

Thanks Scott. Joel recommened the Herbie as well, I'm glad I went with two drains so I could make it happen. Did you end up with an Elos? I ran the skimmer for a little while in the sump just to break it in a little bit. The bubble production was impressive and it was also dead quite which is...

The output from the Herbie is in the baffled portion of the sump so that will never change. I have an ATO that will keep the return pump section constant so it sounds like I should be good to go.

I couldn't believe how quite it is, I wish I did this years ago on my current tank (though I've never had two drains before). Do you have to make many adjustments to your gate/ball value to adjust the water level? I've been reading that it may need some adjustments in the beginning until all of...

My 90G starphire/rimless cube build thread

It looks like I'll be moving forward and making the transfer on Saturday afternoon. I just finished up the plumbing and gave it a fresh-water leak test. I have the output nozzles dumping right back into the overflow box as I didn't want to waste 90G of water, I was more concerned about my PVC...

My 90G starphire/rimless cube build thread

I used some 30 minute slow-cure 2-part epoxy from Bob Smith Industries. It can be found any many types of hobby shops (I hit up Hobby Town USA in Redmond). You can also toss sand into the wet foam and it will stick just fine. I actually should have done that more to begin with as the epoxy was...

My 90G starphire/rimless cube build thread

Here is an update from the weekend. I was able to finish up with the rock work. Everything is epoxied, sanded, and ready to go. I just have to add a little bit more foam by one of the Vortech covers and I should be ready to roll. I think I'll add a dab of aquarium silicon to the corners of each...

My 90G starphire/rimless cube build thread

I'm shooting for next weekend but I'll just have to wait and see. Here is progress from today. I cut the eggcrate, attached some rubble with zip ties, and foamed it all in. I'll do the main rock structure and apply some more foam if I need to and then epoxy/sand everything so the foam blends...

My 90G starphire/rimless cube build thread

Thankfully I was able to do all of the cutting outside so there wasn't really any dust. Still a pain to have a tank and stand sitting in my living room, in addition to my other setup. It'll be nice to be back down to one tank :) (the cube of course)

Here is my progress up to date. I finished the stand yesterday except for some small touch ups and knobs. I used the plans as posted by RocketEngineer over of RC and it turned out pretty well. I decided to skip on the doors and make fully recessed panels. The panels are easily removable and will...

Australian + other new arrivals 9/2-9/5

Do you know if they were affected by the hurricane? I have been waiting to hear back from David, I didn't even think that he was in that area.

    Help my Yasha!

Uh oh, I thought he was just taking a long nap today :( (yes, it is full of holes :))

    Help my Yasha!

I appreciate your response Lee. I am having my doubts that he is having an issue with his swim bladder so I am hesitate to start any type of treatment. Besides, he only seemed to have that issue for the first day as has been fairly normal ever since. As to his condition now, he seems normal as...

    Help my Yasha!

Sure. He is in my 65G tank, the last fish I added was my Tailspot Blenny about 3-4 months ago, and I've had the Yasha for over three years. The other inhabitants are a firefish, pair of clowns, tailspot Blenny, Cherub Angel, and that's it for other fish. Everyone else seems to be happy and...

My 90G starphire/rimless cube build thread

Joel is the owner of Waves, his website is http://www.wavesreef.com/. Very nice guy to deal with. The tank cost me about $850. I know he has done quite a few 24x24x24 cubes and had a 30x30x30 sitting next to mine when I picked it up, they all look sharp. Thanks for the comments Ben. I feel...

    Help my Yasha!

I came home the other day and found my poor Yasha goby just floating around in the current. I thought he was dead so I fished him out with a net but I noticed he was still alive and moving a bit. I put him back into the tank but kept him in a small container so he wouldn't get blown around. I...

My 90G starphire/rimless cube build thread

I'm going to use pond foam and rubble rock to build the walls with and then coat it in epoxy/aragonite sand to seal it. I've seen quite a few build threads with this idea and I think it looks great. It will be nice to attach a bunch of corals to the back and side of the tank.

My 90G starphire/rimless cube build thread

I picked the tank up yesterday and finally got it home. I will say this, if you EVER have to move a glass tank, those suction cup holders things are worth their weight in gold. It cost me a whopping $9 at an equipment rental store. This tank was heavy but my wife and I made it up the stairs and...

It's not much to look at but here is the tank. It obviously isn't complete, it needs to be trimmed, overflow box attached, etc. But hey, it's progress!

    Source for custom glass aquarium?

What size tank are you considering? I know AO will ship, I priced out a 30x30x24 starphire/rimless cube and they came in at about $1200 w/shipping. I found Joel from Wave's Marine down in Portland that is building the tank for me but I don't know how large of a tank he will do.

Dang, are you going for TOTM #2? :) I'll have to swing by once you get this up and running.
