DIY Lighting Timers to mimic nature

I want to set my lights (main light and moon light) to mimic nature. You can find sun and moon rise and set times for any longitude/latitude online. I am planning eventually to hook up a PLC to do this, but I would still need to invest in the software and proper i/o cards and I can't afford this...

Supplments for Macro Algae - Schultz Plant Food

You bring up good points. Right now my fuge IS connected to my display tank, however I do not have much in my display tank yet. And my longer term plans are to make my current display tank my frag tank and then hook up a display tank upstairs. My currently display tank is 25 gal, as is my fuge...

Supplments for Macro Algae - Schultz Plant Food

I agree, since I do not have the ability to test for iron and the other chemicals I am adding, what I will do is stop dosing until I see slowed chaeto growth (if it does slow) and then start dosing some more for a short period, then stop again and repeat. That way I would hope to read my Chaeto...

Supplments for Macro Algae - Schultz Plant Food

My Chaeto definately started to grow better after I started dosing with the Kent iron, not sure if it was due to lack of nutrients in my understocked tank or the iron, but regardless, it has picked up and I am convinced. Still will not add Schultz tho.

thanks for your input, for now I think I will just continue to use it as fertilizer for my phytoplankton and leave it out of my tank.

Supplments for Macro Algae - Schultz Plant Food

I agree, but at this point my main tank is minimally stocked and is the same size as my refigium (25 gal), I wanted to get the algae to grow in order to fill up the refigium and then to hook up my main display tank at a later date to supply the required nutrients fior growth.

Hi Barry, thank you for your replies regarding my questions on clams. I would like to buy a couple clams to start gaining experience with caring for clams with eventual plans to breed if all goes well. First I would like to see if I can get them to spawn. What clams would you recommend for...

Supplments for Macro Algae - Schultz Plant Food

I have been adding Kent Marine Super Chelated Iron Macro-algae supplement with Manganese for reef type marine aquariums to my refigium with good results (good macro algae growth). But I am cheap, I actually did not buy this, the LFS guy gave me what was left in his bottle, obviously hoping I...

How difficult is it to breed clams?

I am actually planning on using the top portion of my ebb and flow hydroponic system for this, and put my 250 watt metal halide on it. I also have a couple 400 Watts I could use too. I got the best deal in the world on a hydroponic system and lights on CL. This tray is about 12" high x 36 x 48...

bright green polyp coral - ID

I bought this bright green sick coral form a LFS and fragged it. Can anyone tell me what this is? Are there any special conditions I need to maintain for this coral? THe LFS does great with the other corals but not this green one. This guy had some major tissue loss. thanks!

Is Tincture of Iodine (7%) the same as Lugols just stonger?

I ended up doing a salt water dip since my RO water was too cold. I took 2 drops of tincture of iodine (7%) and added 12 drops of water. 2 out of the 14 drops (1/7) was iodine, therefore I diluted to 7% x 1/7 = 1% Iodine. I then added 10 drops of this 1% mixture to 16 oz of warm salt water...

What is my Rose bubble Tip Anemone up to?

I recently obtained a rose bubble tip anemone and have a few questions I hope you could help me with. First off, if originally placed her on a central rock in my aquarium and she attached immediately and appeared happy. She was open and eating (fed a couple chunks of prawn). See pic link below...

Is Tincture of Iodine (7%) the same as Lugols just stonger?

Since no one has replied, I found out the following: "Tincture of iodine is a disinfectant, usually 8% elemental iodine in ethanol." Therefore, I assume that it has alcohol, I would normally assume that was bad, but I have been reading how people add vodka to the water for various positive...

Is Tincture of Iodine (7%) the same as Lugols just stonger?

So as I understand it, Lugols is 2% iodine? I have a bottle of a tincture of iodine which is 7% iodine. So if I dilute it down to 2% can I use it the same as Lugols? thanks,

    Watchman Goby running amuck

I have a Diamond watchman goby and I love him, but he is out of control in my 25 gal tank (with attached 25 gal refigium). He eats pellets no problem and will even swims up and picks them out of the water when I feed, but he continually digs, hauling up sand from under my live rock and making...

zooanthid eating nudibranch?? what is it?

I was wondering why my zoanthids were closed so tight over the last week when this morning I found this little dude chowing on one of them. I figure he is a nudibranch. Now I wonder if I have more in my tank, when I caught this guy he seemed to let loose pieces of himselve that I wonder would...
