Here we go again...DSB...yes or no?

Yes a little, the OH- would be converted to an alkalinity unit just like in lime water.

Here we go again...DSB...yes or no?

The carbon source is an organic food. The example below is for methanol (CH3OH), it would need to be balanced differently if another carbon source is used. NO3- + 5/6 CH3OH => 1/2 N2 + 5/6CO2 +7/6 H2O +OH- Ref. The Reef Aquarium Vol III, J Charles Delbeek, Julian Sprung, Chapter 6, pg. 260.

Here we go again...DSB...yes or no?

I have been carbon dosing for a while for phosphate control. I do not have a nitrate problem (Knock on wood). It works very well for me. Carbon dosing in the past for me resulted in my last plenum turning into agrocrete, thus rendering it useless, and impossible to change. I agree with you...

Here we go again...DSB...yes or no?

From my experience you have to feed the deep sand bed (in tank or remote) to get the full effect of nitrate and phosphate removal. I fed my tank Acetate when I had a plenum, and alcohol now that I have a RDSB and a shallow sand bed in the tank. I have seen first hand that it helps to keep the...

    more lighting for sps....

I have a 90 tall with two HQI Reeflux 12K 250 Watt bulbs. It is adequate, for the heat load that I can bear. I would have preferred 400 Watts, but then my heating problems would require me to get a chiller. I believe on Reef Central there was a link on light set efficiency. The 250W HQI...

    Redox Powder

This is a new one on me. Potassium Permanganate is a very powerful oxidizer. Using Potassium Permanganate in a tank sounds extremely dangerous. I have heard some use it with some success as a Acropora Nudibrach killer, but only in external dips at 50mg/L. Could someone post a link how it...

using a Plenum in a aquarium

update on the remote deep sand bed, 30 days later. I switch to vodka dosing because the RDSB was not neutralizing all of the vinegar, and the residual vinegar neutralized some of my alkalinity. This resulted in 1-2 point drops in alkalinity during the automatic top-offs. This was not good...

Calcium Reactor not recommended for under 100gallons?

Here to being the other voice. I agree with the local fish store. I had a 75 gallon, and added the Ca reactor to it three times and took it off three times for the fluctuating pH. After a slight upgrading to 90 gallon I placed the Ca Reactor back on. Wala it works now. What did I change...

using a Plenum in a aquarium

I am new transplant to this forum, and I have been posting on reef central for about 8-10 months now. I believe in plenums, but you have to be careful, because over time I think that they can really work against you if you are not careful. Like all active filters over time they need to be...
