    Thanks a ton Scooty! :D

    VHO's & PC's on same Ballast?

Thanks Scooty... They are straight pin PC's. I was looking on that site and on the ballast itself and it says that with 4 bulbs on the 430 they can only be max 2 feet each totalling 8 feet overall...I suppose this would be a problem...I have 2 46 inch VHOs and the 2 PC's are 21 inches long...

    VHO's & PC's on same Ballast?

Hi all... A quick question for those of you more electrically inclined than myself... Can you run VHO's and PC's together on the same ballast? I have an Icecap 430 powering 2 110W VHO's. I also have 2 55W PC's in the same hood powered by a seperate ballast. The PC's won't turn on anymore, and...

saltwater tanks and allergic reactions for kids?

That should help...make sure you go through the house top to bottom and clean up any dried mold spots with a bleach solution...

Best Recommended way to rid of Bristleworms

I wouldn't worry about them unless you have some of those nasty Caribbean fire worms...like Nikki pointed out they will limit their population to the available food supply....

saltwater tanks and allergic reactions for kids?

I would also look at the mold issue...an aquarium can dramatically raise the humidiy level in your home and make prime conditions for mold growth...

Does live sand really speed up cycling time?

I don't think it speeds up the initial bacterial establisment nearly to the point of justifying the additional cost of store-bought bagged "live" sand....better off spending the money elsewhere IMO... MikeS

    Dsb

Understood, just try to work around that as best you can...:D

Add the fish that are going to put the most bioload on the system first if possible.

    ZEOvite....good or not so good?

We had a lenghty thread on it a while back...here it is... http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9049

    Dsb

Yeah, DSB's are not really ideal in very high bioload situations, but if you can reduce the amount of waste and pollutants that end up in the DSB in the first place, you can effectively get away with a higher bioload. Carbon is your chemical filtration (provides a bit of mechanical and some...

    Dsb

Typically, you want to place granulated carbon in a mesh bag or filter sock and put it in a high flow area of your system, like a filter or outlet to your 'fuge. Carbon should be changed out regularly, I try not to go over 2 weeks or so on mine. Keep researching DSB's, there is tons of info out...

    Dsb

There isn't really a specific number of fish you can or can't have in a certain size tank, as there are tons of varibles that play into what the overall bioload is, and how it is dealt with in the tank. Certain fish are going to have more of an impact on bioload than others because of their...

    Dsb

well, with a large bioload, an SSB would be a better option than a DSB, in my opinion. Too large of a bioload will quickly overwhelm the DSB and make it more problematic. An SSB will still require pretty regular maintenance however, especially with a large bioload. Reguardless of the setup...

    Dsb

I agree. The big difference I've noticed between the two is the speed at which things occur in the tank. In a BB tank, there is an immediate negative reaction to excess nutrients, typically manifested in an algae bloom of sorts. But these reactions are also very quick to disappear once the...

    Dsb

Ahh yes, they do have "risks" not associated with BB setups, but BB setups have drawbacks as well. Not to sure I'd go as far as calling them risks really, as a properly maintained DSB really isn't that risky, it just has some quirks that the reefkeeper needs to be aware of... I've done both...

    Dsb

Well, in a nutshell, you'll get better results, lower risk of toxin buildup and a longer life out of your DSB if you keep the bioload low and remove as many of the water pollutants and solid waste as you can by skimming, carbon, mechanical filtration, ect, before it has a chance to accumulate in...
