    "Shark Attack"

A lifeguard had to save a small sand shark from swimmers....:doubt: http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=animals_oddities&id=5632624 MikeS

    coraline algea

Most likely it's the increase in intensity that did it...most coralline thrive best in low and/or indirect light conditions... MikeS

    We hate the Raiders!

One more Raider bash and this thread gets locked! Yes, I'll admit I'm a Raider fan....:doubt: MikeS

    politicaly correct

Well, back then, we really didn't have access to live rock (especially in Wyoming:D), what we would typically do when setting up a new tank is to take several gallons of water, a used filter pad or two, and a few cups of crushed coral (which is what we used in my area back then almost...

    politicaly correct

I don't believe that this occurs nearly to the degree you are claiming it does. Generally, if you read through most of the threads here, members attempt to help newcommers by providing them with a good basic answer to their question, and usually this help comes with some more in-depth...

    politicaly correct

It's important to realize that there are very few hard and fast rules in this hobby, and there are many paths to the same destination so to speak. Having said that, how would one propose to outline a "basic" setup for a newcommer to the hobby? There are many different approaches to tank keeping...

    Can ick just happen?

Again, it probably depends on the particular tank in question. I have heard theories (which I happen to believe) that state that while ich may be present in the tank, infection of livestock doesn't occur until the population of ich reaches a certain point, and tank/livestock conditions are...

    Can ick just happen?

No, this was many years ago, long before I had a reef tank...these were FO tanks with no new additions. I remember being puzzled about ich outbreaks when nothing new had been added to the tank for over a year... Reguarding the study...one has to remember that these types of observations can be...

    Can ick just happen?

I'm with Don...in the past I have seen it spring up in my tanks outside the supposed 11 month window with no new additions of livestock. MikeS

using a Plenum in a aquarium

Idealy, as much of the detritus should be removed as possible. The idea is to keep the bioload on the plenum (or any substrate for that matter) to a minimum in order to keep from overwhelming it, thus increasing both its lifespan and its effectiveness. MikeS

Practical issues aside, that would be an interesting way to approach a remote substrate system... MikeS

using a Plenum in a aquarium

I removed the DSB 2 years ago in october when I moved the tank, it is now a BB setup. I have a larger tank I'm going to move the reef to hopefully sometime this summer, I plan on a SSB in that tank. I think that a remote DSB has some merit, providing it is large enough to not get quickly...

using a Plenum in a aquarium

It depends on what we mean by "performing". Sure, the bacterial processes that take place in our tank are basically the same that take place in the wild reef, but it's important to realize that these biological processes are largely not responsible for the low nutrient water quality found on the...

    A question of ethics

Caveat Emptor.....:D I agree that it is wrong of sellers to take advantage of others lack of knowledge to make a profit...but I also think that coral pricing is highly subjective to start with, and it is ultimately the buyer's responsibility to educate him/herself and purchase...
