    I over shot my Alk...

And I havent tested the Calcium yet. It was 470 last night, I wanted to balance the ALK then tackle the Calcium and Magnesium. MG was 1100 if I remember right. PH was 8.2 before I overshot the ALK, not sure what it is. Ill test in the morning.

    I over shot my Alk...

I used this stuff: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/products/calcium-alkalinity-magnesium/two-part-calcium-and-alkalinity-solution/two-part-calcium-and-alkalinity-total-package-large-1.html Basically its bulk reef supplies 2 part kit. Pretty much high quality baking soda.

    I over shot my Alk...

My first experiment of adjusting the hardness prior to water change hit a rough spot. Its a 20 gal container, no heater, with a power head keeping it moving. If I understand right, DKH can drop a couple points a day if I let it sit. So give it a few days, and it should test at around 9...

Dosing Ca/Alk/MG prior to Water change?

I already had it pre-mixed. I use Bulk reef supplies 2 part dosing kits, so they are already dissolved in 1g jugs. I keep my water cold till the day before it goes in the tank, so its mixing with a power head cold right now. I put the dose in about 3 hours ago, when can I test to see how far its...

Dosing Ca/Alk/MG prior to Water change?

Oops! I dosed a couple ounces of MG and Alk within minutes of each other. I know I have naturally high Ca so I wasn't planning on dosing that. I was about to ask how long to wait before I can reliably test. Sounds like it can take upwards of a week to properly prepare water.

Dosing Ca/Alk/MG prior to Water change?

I use reef crystals too. But it varies slightly sometimes. Its coming out of my latest bucket: 470 6.5 1050 The problem with going from purple to orange is the orange is more inconsistent vs. the purple. Thx for the replies, Ill pre-dial from now on.

Dosing Ca/Alk/MG prior to Water change?

Is it ok to dial in my water parameters before introducing it to my tank? I typically get 450 ca, 6.5 alk, 1050mg just form mixing my saltwater. would be nice to at least dial up my alk and mg before I introduce it to my tank.

What salt mix are SPS-ers here using?

When you do your water changes. Do a little of the new stuff, and alot of the old. Then step it up gradually over the next few changes till you ween over to the new stuff. 25/75 --> 50/50 --> 75/25 --> %100 Ive swapped cold turkey before out of ignorance, lucky me...no trouble. Stepping up...

What salt mix are SPS-ers here using?

IO is good, I typically been using the orange buckets, but they were out at barrier reef last week....so I got a purple bucket. I hear the generic purple buckets are more consistent, which will make my dosing a lot easier. But it isn't the "Reef" specialty salt.

    Wood sealant/paint?

If your doing a polyurethane clear coat, do it at least 3 or 4 coats. I did 1 coat a day for a week on my stand. Holds water like a tub if I spill. Ive never thought of using it on dry wall, I don't know either way honestly. Ask salmonslayer, he would probably know. He works at Homedepot, and...

    Nano Lighting

FYI 650ma is around %65 power. I currently have mine running at about 450ma, Ill be increasing it to 800ma sometime this month. When I finish the last two panels. I picked up the final parts last week, just need time to wire it all together. Then Ill pump the whole array to about %80 of its max...

1 MH light covering the same area as two or three stationary lights.

This coral farmer has his MH's on tracks that slide the light back and forth. Claims he gets good growth at a significant cut in costs because hes using 1 light to cover the same area you would need two or even three. Makes sense, clouds move across the ocean all day, so light intensity changes...

How long does freeze dried cyclopeze last?

No freezer burn on the home made. Freeze dried is mold free. Good to know, thx. They do eat everything I throw at them. But this stuff in particular really gets the tank going!

How long does freeze dried cyclopeze last?

I only used half the can in my home made food mix, but that was 8 months ago. Ive kept it sealed in a dry place. It looks and smells fine, still has the same consistency as it died early this year. And since I'm on the topic...how long does home made frozen fish food last in the freezer? I seal...

    Nano Lighting

I wouldn't worry about the lights overpowering the corals. 6 LED's isnt really much. My dad has 18(9w/9b) over his nano on dimmable meanwell drivers, running at 650ma for the array.

    Nano Lighting

Nope, your going to be fine. 99.9% of the time you keep your w/b lights on or off. The dimmable is just to create a nice mood light from time to time.

    new plumbing

Then the power cuts out, and then back on. Hopefully he wont have his sump return chamber containing more than his tank needs to topoff.
