    Carbon is confusing

Boomer- so what about the two little fishies reactor? Also flows upwards, no need for a bag.... BTW, wife is back in town with the camera, will try and take some pics of Eric's carbon. Mat

tank size for an emperor angel

I would strongly advise against purchasing a fish with the thought being that you would keep it for a while and then sell it to someone with a bigger tank, or perhaps, upsize tanks yourself. Bad practice and not really in the best interest of these amazing animals for whom we try to care. I...

    DI Replacement Filters

I get all my refill stuff from purely H20. Their prices are unbeatable for DI resin, replacement RO filters, carbon filters and sediment filters. None of that 10 micron crap. They are almost all 1 micron and 5 micron. http://www.purelyh2o.com/ And, we get a 5% discound if you put in the...

    Carbon is confusing

Not that I am a fancy chemist or anything, but I have been using Eric's carbon for about 5 months now. I like it better than the Black Diamond carbon i was using before. Cleaner, nice pellet size, goes well in a reactor. Keeps the water clear and everything healthy and was reasonably priced...

Joe's Wet Dream, A 550 Gallon Work In Progress

Now that I think more about it, the 72" x width of 54" makes me think that two rows of three bulbs for a total of 6 bulbs would probably be best. And again, the 250w bulbs will be less electricity, less heat, less cost to setup, cheaper bulbs to maintain and with a good reflector, should cover...

Joe's Wet Dream, A 550 Gallon Work In Progress

My tank is about half this size, but it was a big step up for me. it seems like you learn with each new project, esp when you upsize. A few pieces of advice. 1. Save the money on the calcium reactor for now, and go with a chiller. It may be a year before you need the calc reactor if you...

    Replacement RO membrane

I have a 5 stage Premium brand RO/DI unit. The RO membrane has not been replaced in the units 4-5 year lifetime, which was fine when I had a smaller tank, but I have been running my 170 for about the last 2 1/2 years. It was billed as a 36gpd unit. Any suggestions on places to purchase a...

    Maxijet mod chattering

word up. The sandpaper was the perfect way to trim down the prop. Been running now for 3 hours and not a single chatter. Thx for the help man. I ordered 2 more of these kits that just arrived today. Any opinion on the "new" vs "old" way of assembly. To review, "old" is with clear hard and...

    Maxijet mod chattering

Hello there. I recently purchased a maxijet mod from mjmods.com. i put it together this last weekend, put it in the tank the day before yesterday. It has some issues with chatter. About every 5 min or so, the propeller begins to chatter and tries to rotate in the opposite direction. It is...

    Pagoda care

I have a coral almost exactly like this. It is healthy and has had steady growth over the last 2 years. Good water flow is important and I target feed about 1x/wk or so with frozen foods. The polyps have the ability to come out about twice as much as they are for yours.

A pic of the Achilles Tang

Beautiful fish, one of my favorite as well.

    Phytoplankton Culture Beginner

I used to culture it myself, but as Anthony mentioned, the quality was too low. I had horrible trouble with algae blooms. They all went away after I stopped dosing.

    Maxijet Mod...

I remember a few months back the club got a bunch of maxijet mods. Are there any of these left? If not, I was thinking about ordering 2 from MJMods.com. I am curious if the carbon fiber insert rods are helpful or necessary... Anyone have any advice? Thx, Mat

    Moorish Idols

Beautiful fish. Absolutely amazing. Good for you for trying such a difficult fish.

    Phytoplankton Culture Beginner

typically they say "no" and the reason why is that DTs is actually a mixed culture of 4 diff types of phyto. They would compete with each other and eventually only 1 type of phyto will win out. The other 3 will die and can pollute the culture.

    Bulkheads in tank bottom?

I agree, having a drilled tank is nice, no worries about the U-tube clogging or losing suction. I would put a standpipe on it also.

    damsel removal

I have used a glass pitcher before with success. Place it in the tank for a day or so, feed into it. Allow the fish to freely go into the pitcher for a few feeds. Then feed into the pitcher, have a net ready and when the chromies go in, slap the net over the top. Works to repeat, but the...
