Need suggestions for red fish in a 45g

Maybe a wrasse? Mystery wrasse is more pink than red, but a very nice fish. Sixline has red color. I believe there are other wrasses that are red or have red color, but the 2 I mentioned are the only ones I personally have experience with. hth, rob

    Opinions on a 55 gal

FWIW, I have a 45g tank I currently run sumpless, with a CPR bakpak skimmer. I have 4x95W VHO's and have been keeping zoas, softies, LPS, and a few hardy SPS. This setup has worked very well for me coming up on 2 years I believe. I put my heater, plus carbon & phosban in my CPR, leaving 2...

    not sure what to do

Hi & welcome to RF! IMHO, if you do not already own one, I would start by getting a good RO/DI (Reverse Osmosis/De-Ionizing) water purifying unit. IME, you will save yourself a lot of future algae problems if you start out only using pure water. Look to spend anywhere between $100-250 for a...

    Problems with Xenia

Also, FWIW, I have a very large toadstool leather and a very large yellow leather in my 45g along with a bunch of xenia, and IME the leathers have not caused the xenia any problems...

    Problems with Xenia

I have heard that xenia is an excellent indicator of low iodine levels. In regards to iodine, I have heard that test kits for iodine are no good because it quickly gets absorbed into living tissue, therefore is very hard to test in the water. But, xenia can be used as a gauge to tell if iodine...

How many tanks do you have up and running?

a 45g and 90g here, independent of each other. 45g with no sump, 90g with a sump. Keeps me busy with cleaning, testing & water changes...but that's therapy time for me ;)

    Hydor Koralia powerheads

I have a seio 820 and a koralia 3 in my 45g. I bought the koralia 3 to replace a 820 that failed on me... In my 90g, I have 2 seio 1100's and a koralia 4 (plus 2 maximods). I've had the seio's much longer than the koralia's, but from my experience, the seio's seem to need cleaning more...

    testing, Calcium

IMHO, your Alk is at a totally acceptable level, I wouldn't consider 9 dKH low, as typical NSW is 7 dKH, and 9 dKH is right in the middle of the recommended level for reefs. If your 2 Ca tests show 390-400 vs LFS at 580, I would lean towards your tests more than the LFS (2 out of 3, right?)...

    sea cucumbers?

I have a little "pink" cuke, has a yellow crown when open and is about 2 inches long or so. It does not hang out on the bottom, rather it likes to climb as high as possible and just hang out in one spot. For the longest time, it was on my front glass. So long in fact that coralline grew all...

    Best LFS in Seattle area?

I LOVE Barrier Reef! Great fish, corals & staff...not necessarily in that order ;)

    Best LFS in Seattle area?

These are the ones I like: Barrier Reef (New Castle, eastside) The Shark Reef (Silverdale, ferry ride from Seattle) Ocean Reef Aqautics (Poulsbo, ferry ride from Seattle, fairly close to Shark Reef) Blue Sierra (Issaquah, eastside) Salt Water City (Bellevue, eastside) hth, rob

Cool, I'll just let it be then :)

My Toadstool is about to drop a baby frag

Pictures of baby frag Here's a couple of shots of the new frag. It has been staying attached to the rock using the rubberband, so I'm tempted to just leave it be. Unless the concensus is to remove the rubberband & try either the toothpick or squeeze between two rocks... Otherwise, I am...

My Toadstool is about to drop a baby frag

Thanks! The baby frag dropped on Thursday, 7/19. I am trying to use a rubberband to keep it attached to a small rubble rock. The 1st couple of attempts the frag ended up floating away (I'm trying to not have the rubberband too tight). But now I seem to have gotten it to stay put. I'll take...

    ?? re: Alk/Hardness tests

Yes, that's correct. Alk and Ca are both relative to your salinity level.

    ?? re: Alk/Hardness tests

I used to use API Alk and Ca test kits. I liked them because they were pretty easy to use. I've since switched to Salifert. The resolution on their tests are much better than API I think. I didn't have a chance to compare the 2 personally, so my comment is definitely hear-say. But, previous...

    ?? re: Alk/Hardness tests

Yes, I agree w/you it seems strange. I know this was discussed at the beginning of the thread, but thought I'd bring it up again: are you sure your Alk test is producing correct reading? I just hope that your original 16 dKH reading was not more like 9, and now your 9 reading is not really 2...

    ?? re: Alk/Hardness tests

9dKH is what I target also, which is right in the middle of the recommended level for reef aquaria (7-11 dKH), and just slightly higher than typical NSW (7 dKH). http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rhf/index.php Regarding the TN, I would think your high Alk levels would have caused that...

My Toadstool is about to drop a baby frag

I've had this Toadstool in my 45g for approximately 1.75 yrs, one of my first corals in fact. When I first got it from SWC (it was actually given to me when I purchased some zoas or something), it was no bigger than a 50 cent piece. It survived last winter's storm (8 days without power), and...
