    overflow question

IMHO, I would not use a pump to move water from your display to your sump. Rather, I would let gravity do the work, which will be much safer. Also, I don't know that I've ever seen an internal overflow on a tank that wasn't drilled. Maybe it can be done, but I'm not exactly sure how. The...

What ATO for reef tanks without sump?

jaysauce: what do you mean maintenance? do you mean did I have do modify anything to get the ATO installed? If so, then yes I did, since my tank has eurobracing on the top, with some cutouts for overflow, etc. The mounting hardware that came with the ATO is made for a regular tank (w/o...

What ATO for reef tanks without sump?

This is the only pic I could find where you can see the ATO, but unfortunately it's cut off a bit. I think the water level is probably another inch higher than the pic shows.

What ATO for reef tanks without sump?

Not much at all, probably about 1/2 inch...maybe a little less.

    Rob's 93g 30"x30"x24" Marineland Cube

The anemone has been moving around the tank quite a bit, almost completing a full circle of the tank. It must be looking for a sweet spot for light, but still looks healthy. At one point it was in contact with one of my acans, which caused the tissue on 1/2 of it to recede. That was about 3...

What ATO for reef tanks without sump?

I used to have my ATO hooked up directly to the display when I had no sump (I've since added a sump, but still use the same ATO, just relocated it to the sump). I used this one: http://autotopoff.com/products/DT1/ It's a bit of an eyesore, but besides that it works flawlessly. They also...

    Trying to add corals

Hi Christian: did you ever introduce copper to the tank before? Not sure about corals, but snails & crabs could be explained if copper was in the tank before... HTH, Rob

    ro vs ro/di

You can actually get RO/DI for pretty close price to what you linked to, such as these: http://buckeyefieldsupply.com/showproducts.asp?Category=167&Sub=166 Usually the more expensive units will come with an extra stage, pressure gauge, TDS meter, flush valve, etc, etc... There is some value...

    Astrea snail eggs

I started my new tank last October and then added a CUC with quite a few snails of various kinds. As of now, I can probably spot over 100 baby snails of various size throughout the tank. In the overflow area (pic below, not all the white dots are snails, but many are) is maybe where they...

Suggestings for auto kalk drip system...

Hi Rob: yeah, i am one of those folks who add kalk to my topoff water. I make up 5g at a time, and add about 10 tsp of kalk per 5g. Mix it all up & then let the dust settle, literally (there will be kalk that doesn't disolve which will fall to the bottom of the container). I then let my...

VolxJapan Grassy LeDio LED's Are Here!

Very cool Jeremy. I was just looking at a very similar product that I think is being made by a hobbiest. Do you know if these lights will fit inside a 12" tall canopy? I'm thinking they would fit, but not sure whether the optics are wide enough at that mounting height to provide good coverage...

    Rob's 93g 30"x30"x24" Marineland Cube

Picked up this very nice anemone from Jason yesterday. My clowns took to it immediately, and after a little wandering around, it looks like the nem has found a spot it likes (at least for now...)

    LiterMeter III Mounting, any ideas?

Well, I used to have my Litermeter III mounted in my stand, above my sump. I used large velcro to attach it to the side wall. Everything was great until my skimmer one day decided to freak out. When I opened my stand I found skimmer foam everywhere in the stand (the foam was on the top...

    Why use Starboard for Barebottoms?

cyber_ecco: starboard is completely flat, but if you are using with a glass tank there will be a gap underneath it IF you cut it so it sits on top of the silicone seal along the bottom of the tank. I didn't know this when I built my tank, so that's what I have now. I just read that in another...

    Why use Starboard for Barebottoms?

White is the only color I've seen, but it may come in other colors. It's the same material that is used to make kitchen cutting boards... Here's some pics of it in my tank: http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48818&page=3

    Why use Starboard for Barebottoms?

I am using it in my BB tank. I got it from Tap Plastics. They can cut it to exact size you need. It's not cheap, but not super expensive either...different thickness will make it more or less expensive. I didn't drill any holes into it for pegs, etc. I used to to protect the bottom and also...

will a sump help with brown algae growth?

Hmm, I doubt well water will be any better. City water is going to be treated, so there's some chemicals in there. But there are going to be a lot of minerals in well water, plus other "unknowns". I have a feeling that the minerals and such might actually be better food for the algae...

will a sump help with brown algae growth?

+1 on no tap water! IME, you will be fighting a losing battle with algae as long as you're using tap water.
