A 750g SPS system is born

Alberto, I think your skimmer may have a design problem. Your compressor is putting a lot of air into the skimmer. If the cup top is bolted down and sealed, all of the air that your compressor is pumping into it can only escape from the small cup drain line. The high air flow trying to get...

    Automated water changes

You can but the cost of the replacement RO and DI filters will cost a lot more than the water you recover. Of course you'd then have to put an RO/DI unit on that RO/DI waste, and then another on that waste, and so on and so on........   :D

A 750g SPS system is born

Good idea.... drilling a very very small hole ( 1/64") at the top, which will allow a small amount of air to leak out, is an easy way to make a vacuum break.

    Automated water changes

It is a method for making a surge wave water movement in a reef tank that he has a picture of in his photo gallery.

    Automated water changes

Scooterman, Did you ever build that wave tower reef tank? Great idea. It would make it easy to do effective water changes with it. Periodically fill one of the towers with fresh mix and have the main tank to overflow to drain.

    Automated water changes

I have found basically doing what you describe works well and I've added a few tricks. I don't agree with Randy's Article on small changes being effective. It will work but you toss out an awful lot of the fresh salt mix you put in with small changes and it is very inefficient. I agree that...

A 750g SPS system is born

Alberto, Also, I remember back in this thread you had talked about your Kalk metering pump failing from calcium build up in the tubing. One solution is to put the feed pump on the clean water feed side of the reactor, where it doesn't see a heavy calcium solution that wants to plate out...

A 750g SPS system is born

Fascinating thread......waiting with baited breath for the pics on the new skimmer in operation. That check valve and drip leg for the compressor was a great idea. This may have been touched on before, but I’d suggest putting a good vent fan to the outside in the garage if you don’t want to...

NPR.....a different twist on Vodka dosing

At the top of my recirculation tank I built a 3" deep rectangular tray with two large holes on the bottom. Two coarse nylon bag filter set in these holes. Into the bags I add a handful of filter floss. All of my tank overflow is directed through the bag filters. As the bag filter begin to clog...

NPR.....a different twist on Vodka dosing

There are a number of different ways to address exporting issues. This is a copy of what I had posted on another forum. It is a little wordy. I'm not advocating how I export excess nutrients is the only way or am I advocating for anyone else to copy it. It can be misapplied and I have...

6 months after going BB and making process chnages

My thinking for going with heavy flow for short periods and then greatly reduced flow rates for hours, was that it was more like what happens on an actual reef. Flow on a lot of reefs changes directions, intensity, and velocity several times a day and has very low flow for long periods. I felt...

6 months after going BB and making process chnages

Thanks Steve....I'm having fun with this reef stuff finally. It can be frustrating getting a handle on it. My cool looking Maine Coon would love to get close to your parrot . I used to have a big GreenWing Maca and a Quaker parrot. I had a video of my std. poodle, the main coon, the...

6 months after going BB and making process chnages

Thanks Mike....coming from you that's a nice compliment. The logic of removing as much waste as quckly as possible just became to obvious. Why put up with waste and try to process it when it can be removed? I just didn't have any luck with SPS while I had a DSB with our without CPW. The real...

6 months after going BB and making process chnages

Thanks......I see no rapid changes in normal skimmer out put from the aeration and heavy recirculation. What I do see is a filter bag that get loaded up with detrius daily. On bacteria I'm from a different school. You can't have life without it and a lot of good bacteria limits the amount of...

6 months after going BB and making process chnages

I rebuilt my 2 year old tank about 6 months ago because I was having a hair algae control problem. I was also having difficulty keeping nutrients low enough to have any real success with SPS. There are several major changes in equipment and approach that I made that I am very pleased with...
