Like any Salt-Water tank you set-up... it needs to "cycle". That "cycle" is the process of developing the bacteria to process the Nitrogen Cycle. My recommended way for "future" use, is having the Floss pad already in your current system, so that bacteria has had the time to develop on it...

    Is sea salt created equally?

Sherry, First, and most importantly… WELCOME TO REEF FRONTIERS!!! :D :D :D Myself being relatively new in the Reef Keeping world (especially when compared to the experience level of people such as Anthony), my thoughts about the various Salt products available to us don't really "hold...

I don't think I would try "cotton"... but the Floss Pads that you can purchase at about any Pet Store work well. Easily cut down to the exact size you require for your piticular filter... and don't fall apart.

How to clean an ORP probe

Cleaning with a soft toothbrush and vinegar (use the white vinegar) shouldn't be any problem at all for either your probe or tank. Lightly rinse after cleaning. If some vinegar droplets do happen to get into your system, they won't harm anything.

I'll second purchasing from Elmo!!! He has done an amazing job creating the exact habitat and conditions for all of his various Clowns to span and grow up in. They also have the advantage for you, of being "Tank Raised"... so again, Brook is probably not a concern with them.

Either a 10 or 20 gallon QT tank should fine for Clowns. Also the "hangover filter but no cartridges" is exactly what you would want also. I have some of the filter pad always in the sump of my display tank. When I need my QT tank, I use water from my display to fill the QT (then replace...

    Can i keep a mandarin?

It sounds to me as if you have already done your research into owning a Mandarin... knowing that the more mature your tank setup is, the better for it! :) Not owning a Mandarin myself, but I do have a Scooter Bleanie... which is also mostly a pod eater... what I found that helped my system...

    Can i keep a mandarin?

You are doing EXACTLY what you need to do before purchasing anything for your tank... and that is asking questions, researching, and asking more questions! :D I don't think we can begin to say if your system would support a mandarin without knowing more about it than you've posted here. How...

Always try to remember here though... This is YOUR tank. YOUR choices, and what works for YOU! :) Everyone is different, and will have different experiences. What you are hearing from me here personally, as well as others I'm sure, is what I have myself found to be true for ME. Research...

From what I've read, tank-raised clowns are less prone to deseases like brooklynellosis... so that may be a better choice. As for a Maroon Clown??? They do get larger than a lot of the other clowns... and are even more territorial.

Watching any possible purchases while they are at the LFS is always a good thing. Gives you the oppertunity to watch that they are eating (something some breeds don't take to well in captivity), as well as looking for signs of stress and/or desease. Unfortunately, any fish you happen to see at...

    clownfish + BTA

If you do end up with "14$ wilds that the LFS sells"... I highly recommend you have a QT tank setup, and do some preventitive treatment of your Clowns, BEFORE ever adding them to your display tank. I believe if you read through some of the "Stickies" at the top of the forum, you will find out...

Pic of the 6.6gal nano with new rock...

I like how you have done your aquascaping, with all the holes for your animals to work their way around! Tank is looking great, can't wait to see it in about a year! :D

    is this ick??

It doesn't look like Ich to me either. Looks possiblly like Net Damage to me. Keep them in good quality water (hopefully in your QT tank???), and keep an eye on them for any development of redness. With Net damage, you are most worried about possible infection developing.

    When to use what lighting

I enjoy the look of running my Actinic's about an hour earlier than my 10K's... leaving everything on for 9 hours, turning off my 10K's... and leaving my Actinic's on for an hour longer. So, my Actinic's run for 11 hours, with my 10K's running 9 hours. I kinda use my Actinic's to give a...

    Scientific name?

Shanon, I'm horrible at names, but it looks to be some type of gorgonian, possiblly Melithaea Sp.??? A close up would probably help those in the "know"... but probably wouldn't help me any. ;) Do you know which part of the world it came from, this may help with the identification.

    New to Reef Frontiers.

I'd like to also goin in the caution of taking any and all things with a Salt-Water tank VERY SLOWLY!!! I know how hard it is... especially on a 1st tank... seeing all the beautiful fish and colorful corals... but the faster you try moving, the more heartbreaks you will have ahead of you...

What can I say... I also sit at a darn puter all day and have quick fingers. ;)

    New to Reef Frontiers.

Brandon, 1st, and most importantly... WELCOME TO REEF FRONTIERS!!! :D :D :D Okay... now that the important stuff is over... on to your questions. I'm a little concerned about your interest in adding too much more to a 29 gallon tank. You do realize that within a year, if cared for...

    DIY Stand Remodel

I would think that would be just fine, yes. Its also a possibility of installing your sump, THEN installing the center brace. Your sump would be locked in then, but how often would you really want to remove it anyway???
