    Yup. I agree.

    Water chemistry advice please

Not really a chemistry expert, but I don't think raised alkalinity by itself is really a big deal for the most part. It's not great, but on the list of things that could be worse, there are many! Elevated alkalinity can cause some SPS to bleach, and some LPS corals like Tracyphyllia don't...

    Water chemistry advice please

No new camera, but I don't post many pics here. Top left is an ORA green birdsnest... Seriatopora guttatus. Grows like a weed.

    Water chemistry advice please

Granted... there are better sources of light for coral than PC, but depending on what you want to keep (even including some types of SPS), they can support a nice little reef. Here's 2x 96W over a 46g... Yeah... you're limited in what you can keep with PC, but you can still have a nice reef...

who has a softy/LPS dominant tank? looking for ideas

Tell me about it... But at least they play nice with others!

    RO/DI

If your tap is 35ppm, and you're getting 13ppm out, then it sure sounds like the membrane. Easiest way to check is take a sample after the RO, but before the DI. The other thing that might be happening is that your DI is completely exhausted and is now leaching stuff back into the pure water...

    Science Fair Project

I think multiple corals of different kinds is a bad idea. You could be introducing chemical warfare between corals, which could cause one of the corals to not thrive - but not have anything to do with salinity. One coral per tank would be my suggestion. Aside from the whole debate on global...

Anyone use a UPS for power outages?

Hmm. Just realize you aren't going to get the run times with that versus the Xantrex unit. You're only getting 16 Amp-Hours of battery with that unit... the Xantrex gives you 40 Amp-Hours.

Anyone use a UPS for power outages?

I've also got that Xantrex and will vouch for it. Good unit for the price. You better have a generator also if you've got $$ invested in the tank, but the Xantrex will at least cover you for those 2-3 hour outages in the middle of the night... without having to get out of bed to hook up the...

    who doses randy's two part?

Not sure if you've seen this calculator, but figured I'd post the link anyway... http://home.comcast.net/~jdieck1/chemcalc.html I'm using C-balance. Guess the economy hasn't hit me in the chops hard enough yet to make me go DIY. :)

    Coming Right Along!

Maybe I'm a little slow... but surfing the various threads here about the move/new store I'm not seeing an address anywhere. Even on your website... no new address. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like that'd be a good thing to leak out to people!

    who doses randy's two part?

Not using Randy's recipe, but think they're all the same. Just to give you some other numbers for comparison, I'm dosing 25ml each morning on my 46g. No drip, just pouring it in a high current area over about 10-15 seconds. Bioload is moderate (a few SPS, but mostly LPS... but growing well!) and...

    Help with acans

I'm thinking along the lines of Trido also, but would put a bigger bet on the stuff you were dosing. From time to time, my acans won't expand as much as normal, but it's only for a day or so. And never all of them at the same time.

    Sand from the coast?

Main reason I wouldn't is because you have no idea what contaminants (chemical, biological, etc) are in it.

    RO/DI Filter

Your initial thinking was correct. If your DI resin was doing all the work, yes, it would change color quickly. Easiest and cheapest thing would be to just spring for a TDS meter and find out what your output really is - before and after the DI stage. That should answer all your questions.

    Power Outage For Nano Tanks

I have one of those xantrex units on my 46g. Great peace of mind. It can easily deal with those 1-2 hour outages during the middle of the night and keep everything running. Agree that with a nano, you could probably get 8 hrs easy out of it. (Just don't hook the lights to it!)

    Tap Water TDS

Sorry... the "next day or two" ended up to be a bit longer than I'd anticipated! Life just gets in the way, sometimes! Here's my setup. PM if you have any specific questions...

    Brain Coral

What kind of "brain coral" are we talking about. There are many different kinds.

A new way to cycle a tank?

The thing I don't get with any of these "instant" methods, is why? What does it save you? The only thing they ever really come up with is that "... it's boring to look at a bare tank for 6 weeks." That's it? That's the only reason? Some of them say that their method gets you "better" bacteria...

    Tap Water TDS

I'll post a picture within the next day or two. In a nutshell, I have a Kold-Steril unit (bad first purchase... back in the day when I though filtered tap water was "good enough") plumbed with the dual DI cannisters after the Kold-Steril filters. The Kold-Steril has two different sets of...
