    heating problem

Along with trido's question, the other one is what temperature do you have them set for? If you're getting down in the 72-73 range, either the total wattage isn't enough or you just plain don't have them set high enough. The temperature on the dial/knob you use to set the heater is rarely...

Evaporation poll. Read first post and then do math please.

Actually... if you reread his post, it's 8 cups per 10 gallons. (He said .85 cups/gallon.) I think the XX/10 gallons is what is screwing everyone up. With that said... During the winter, I'm at just under a cup per 10 gallons, per day. During the summer, I'm at about a cup and a half per...

    Strange beasts in my sand...

OMG!!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! Yup... a quick Google search for Edwardsiidae yielded a bunch of pictures that look dead on with what I've seen when I've pulled the whole thing out of the sand. So obviously I have something to research now, but do you know of any way to easily deal...

    Strange beasts in my sand...

OK... I've been trying to get a good picture of these things for months, and last week an asterina star and one of them made for a great photo opportunity. Here's the picture, and then a description... The white worm-like things live in one place in the sand. They don't seem to move around...

a little help with kent marine turbo ca

I use Turbo Calcium to boost my water change water up to 410 or so. To make things fast/easy, I mix up a solution of 1 quart of RO/DI water with 4 teaspoons of the TurboCalcium. That gives me a solution of Ca of about 7650 ppm. I will then mix about 1/3 cup of that solution into my 5g water...

    Electrical fires due to aquarium???

Powerheads shouldn't be a problem. Even the really energy hungry ones don't really draw that much. I think the biggest opportunity for fires would be not from overloading, but from installations that allow salt water or spray the opportunity to come into contact with the live circuit. Good...

Dealing with a Power Outage - Will this work?

Just wanted to add a personal experience with that Xantrex 400 unit linked to on the first page fo the thread. I have one on my 46g that is plugged in to everything but lights, including 2x 100W heaters. Total draw with everything running at once is about 300W. Depending on how warm the house...

    Sansibia reproduction?

PM sent. (extra text added because my "message was too short"!)

    Sansibia reproduction?

Yup... that's the one. Just another update - the stuff has totally recovered the rock again. Man, this stuff is quick. I've also got more colonies popping up here and there. It'll be interesting to see if it goes through the same cycle again, or if it was a one time deal.

Finally testing water, ca 500 a problem?

#1 - Get a refractometer! #2 - Get a refractometer! #3... :) Not sure if you'd see a snowstorm at 500. With Instant Ocean, your Ca content at 1.025 SG will probably be around 340-360, so water changes will definitely help to bring your Calcium down. Everyone has their favorite salt, but the...

Removing center brace on 46 bowfront

Wouldn't it just be easier to buy a fixture that has two lamps, left and right, instead of just one in the center? I've got a 46g bowfront too... I would never even dream of removing that brace.

Finally testing water, ca 500 a problem?

I don't think you're wrong there, Sid. I've read the same stuff that says grossly higher than NSW values for Ca are not only useless, but can hinder growth. Why some salts are so imbalanced is beyond me. I aim for the same Ca as you... 410, and I keep my alk between 8-10 dkH. Things seem pretty...

Finally testing water, ca 500 a problem?

I don't think your Ca levels are the problem. There are plenty of commercial salts that mix up in that range. I guess my question though is how did you end up with it that high? Do you use a salt mix that's naturally high in calcium to start with? (If so, then you can do water changes 'till the...

    Calc,Alk,Mag suggestions

I use C-balance... only because it's what I started using and things seem to be workin' just fine. I'm a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" type of guy.

is it ethical to keep fish?

I can't really answer your ethical questions because ethics are based upon an individual's own view of right and wrong. What may be ethical for me, may not be ethical for you. And then there's the Governor of Illinois... But seriously... my wife and I have had similar discussions as what you're...

    Flooded the living room twice!

I've got a 46g bowfront, and have to agree with the suggestion made earlier... just go sumpless. There just isn't enough room under the stand to start with, and the odd shape doesn't help either. You don't *need* a sump to maintain good parameters as long as you're on it with your maintenance...

    Sansibia reproduction?

Just an update... the balding of the rock stopped, and it's being recovered now by new little polyps. And now I've got little colonies growing on my two heater holders, and in about 6-8 different places in my tank. Hmmm... prolific little thing.
