Bristle Worms attacking my Brittle stars?

Yeah, my guess would be one of the fish. Bristle worms are scavengers, if you see them eating something it's more than likely dead or dying. The bigger species would be the only exception; they have an appetite for corals. Clayton

    new store!!!!

Larry, I would think twice about Federal Way. The city officials are by far the worst in the state to deal with when it comes to building codes, etc. A good portion of businesses that try there either end up running out of money before they open, or they pack up and move elsewhere and eat the...

What are things you wish you knew when you first started the hobby??

Eco-Complete has been around for quite a while, but the African Cichlid version is fairly new. I've been in the hobby pretty serious for over 20 years, and I'm only 28. :) I guess I've had African Cichlids for about 13 years. In fact I still have one of the "babies" of my original Metriaclima...

    Answer And Ask

People always assume I've spent a lot of money. That's probably because most of my hobbies tend to cost a lot, lol. I need to find cheaper hobbies... It's amazing how much I've spent on my two nanos though; damn near as much as a big tank. Same question. Clayton

    Help... Spider Web In Tank!!!!!!!

No problem at all; but those aren't worms. Although most people assume they are a type of tube worm, those long strings are actually made by a type of sessile snail called a Vermetid. They spit out what looks like a spider web to catch debris in the water, and then suck it back in and consume...

    Answer And Ask

Nope, can't say I'd want to see one. You don't have to go all the way to Australia to see one though; they have plenty of them on the lovely California coastline. Go surfing, you're bound to run into one of them. :) Have you ever shown someone your reef tank and talked about it extensively only...

I saw them in the bottom picture and thought that's what you were talking about. I guess not... :) Clayton

What are things you wish you knew when you first started the hobby??

I started into the hobby pretty serious when I was a kid (I had a $400 pair of breeding FW Angelfish when I was somewhere around 12). The best thing back then would've been places like RF; where you could scan through piles of information before even asking your first question. Although it's...

    Noah story

Where in WA are you? Some pet stores will carry mixed saltwater for sale, and the Seattle Aquarium sells it really cheap. Fleetbox, just curious; why did you say the majority of the cycle happens in the substrate, and there will be a huge ammonia and nitrite increase? Clayton

    Coralline Algae

Yes, other types of algae will grow on coralline; and often will. It's also not a great nutrient exporter because it grows so slow compared to other types. Besides looks (which some people don't like, although I do) there's really only one advantage; and that's if you're maintaining coralline...

    Help... Spider Web In Tank!!!!!!!

White strings are usually caused by Vermetid Worms; which are harmless sessile inverts that are pretty common. If you get too many it's often a sign of overfeeding and/or inadequate filtration. Clayton

With the price of gas, I might have to say the grocery store, lol. Seriously though, I'd like to go back to Europe. I love it over there. Same question. Clayton

    Answer And Ask

I think we have two questions at once here... We're building a deck off the house that will come off the second story, and then it'll have stairs that come down to about three feet off the ground. The lower part will surround a new Koi pond I'm building. As for walking; I take at least a three...

    Answer And Ask

They can attack small fish and inverts if they run out of food. I keep a log of water parameters (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH, KH, temperature, salinity, and GH for my freshwater tanks); and I also keep track of water changes and filter maintenance. It's all done once a week with water...

    A little nature never hurts

Yeah, we're kind of lucky when it comes to annual disasters around here. About the worst we get are winter storms, but those usually top out at around 50-75 MPH; with very little rain. Of course we do get catastrophic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. :) Clayton

    Answer And Ask

I drive slow and aggressive, lol. Actually, I usually drive pretty mild; I've only been in one wreck and it wasn't my fault. What's the dumbest thing you're afraid of? Clayton

    A little nature never hurts

Here are a couple from my area. The first one is up in the mountains, about an hour from our house. The second is our backyard. Although you might not be able to tell, it's actually quite landscaped. Clayton

    MIA clown

Have you added any other live rock besides what you got from that tank; like from the pet store? You could have something like a Mantis Shrimp or Cirolanid Isopod. Clayton

    Hunter Being The Hunted

Not that this happened to you, but I've heard of breeding Clownfish feeding shrimp to anemones before when the shrimp tried to eat the eggs. Clayton

    Whatever Dood!

I like the Ford Excursion myself. Power Stroke diesel engine with a Torque-Shift transmission and more room than two minivans put together. :) Clayton
