    ~ TIPS ~ FYI's ~ and Such

Your return plumbing should be 1.5-2x the size of the outlet on your return pump. I just learned this the other day. I bought a mag-18 to replace a mag-12 a while back, I couldn't understand why my flow was so low. Did some researching and tried 1.25" PVC and almost swamped both drains.... Now...

    Vinegar bath

Hey Skimmy, just had a real quick question for you. I've got a SWC 160 cone coming in tomorrow can you give me a quick run down on the best way to give it a vinegar bath to help it get broken in? I assume fill a bathtub a bit with warm water toss some vinegar in and let it run. Any ratio I...

    Bio Pellets

That makes a lot of sense Mojo. From what I've seen people tend to point their bio-pellet reactor output to the intake of the skimmer and use that to export the the bacteria population. I'll send you a PM when I get the tank stable and we can test whatever you like.

Mojo, I don't know if you've seen this thread on 3reef. Carbon dosing - method testing started - Page 19 - 3reef Forums

    Bio Pellets

Sure thing. I've got the red sea nitrate test (not the pro version) I'll have to dig up what brand my phosphate test is. We can setup a scenario in a few weeks or so when everything gets stable (I'm adding a new skimmer and doing a bunch of flow work this week and want to let that settle out)...

    Bio Pellets

I'm using them, have been for 2 months or so, don't forget I'm a fairly new reefer so I can't say much about long term or vs other forms of carbon dosing but I'll share what I've got. I'll go with negative first. 1. Require more flow than most other media in reactors so you'll need a larger...

i need some help with setting up my sump

Thanks! I did a bunch of research before I pulled the trigger on the sump. 253 Fish: Just a note, all evaporation will impact the return chamber, I'd really recommend some type of auto top off system. A larger return chamber will let you go longer between top offs if you do it manually...

i need some help with setting up my sump

Disclaimer: I'm still a newbie at all this so someone can correct me if I'm wrong on something. I took a 40 breeder and siliconed 4 baffles in it. I have the skimmer section on the left, the return in the center and the fuge area on the right. I had already decided I eventually wanted a SWC...

From the BOD Treasurer: SEAMAX thanks and feedback wanted!

No and that was my fault. I only looked at the items on the forum and when I went in person I was rushed and not knowledgable enough to match names with corals. Which means to me I shouldn't be buying them if I don't know how to ID or care for them :-) I did want to thank everyone that helped...

From the BOD Treasurer: SEAMAX thanks and feedback wanted!

What day did you come?: Sat. 10-noon What did you like about the PSAS booth?: Looked fun, wish I could have stayed more. What didn't you like about the PSAS booth?: The silent auction pieces didn't seem to be labeled well. The tank looked good, but some sellers had very slick setups for their...

Advice on a 90 oceanic tank - Plumbing the overflow box

If you read the Herbie overflow thread Beananimal had a problem with only having 1 failsafe and came up with the "BeanAnimal method" I really like the Herbie, it's working great for everyone I've talked to, silent and not much more difficult than durso.

Advice on a 90 oceanic tank - Plumbing the overflow box

I ran 2 durso for a while, I swapped over to a herbie and man am I so glad I did. The durso was noisy, I know there are ways to silence them but the herbie is so much easier, the only hard part was finding a gate valve and those can be had at ACE hardware.

    cleaner crews

You don't need much of a cleanup crew when the flow pulls the poop away before the fish has a chance to wipe and whisks it down to the sump. For those of us that like sand in our tanks and softies we need a bit more of a cleanup crew :) In all seriousness though I'm going to be adding more...
