banded coral shrimp. friend or foe?

Hi all, We got a banded coral shrimp from liveaquaria.com when we ordered a few other fish for our 72g tank (subject for another thread: two out of three fish keeled over within 10hrs in our QT tank so won't be buying fish from there again) because my son thought it looked cool. We read about...

Yep, for the skimmer 6" probably would do--as long as the pump itself is covered you're good. Here's a pic of my skimmer in action in 9" of water (that skimmer chamber is 9" of water deep, and in a 9"x12" sump chamber--the skimmer body itself is 6" in diameter):

Congrats doc! I've been through Bakersfield (in the Army on my way to training at Ft Irwin) and wow, to think a beautiful saltwater tank like that is thriving in that area is amazing!

    How do I do this

I just moved two 20g high tanks into a new 72g bowfront (in my signature). I used "new" live sand with very little of the old sand and all of the "old" live rocks. I added the live sand and RO/DI water and a few rocks a day into it from each tank--as much as I could spare and still have some...

    blenny issues...

quick update: the tailspot is starting to come out a little at a time now. I saw him pop out of his little cave today and swim around pecking at rocks right in front of the lawnmower and his color is coming back to normal now. I guess he just needs some time to get used to his new neighbor...I hope.

    Starting the process

The skimmer needs to operate in a water depth that allows the microbubbles to percoloate up to the bottom of the collection cup after about 5 minutes of starting up--I think. When you first start it, nothing really happens. It takes about 5 minutes for it to really get going and then after a...

    Starting the process

Check out the attached .jpg of my sump--you'll need to modify the measurements for yours and your baffle height, but I used those measurements and this calculator to determine how much water would be in the sump during normal operation (top of the baffle nearest the return pump) and then how...

I got it from Bulk Reef Supply: 1 x OCT-NW-150 Octopus Needlewheel Skimmer = $168.99 It was comparitively cheap and works like a champ: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Protein-Skimmers-Octopus-Needlewheel-Skimmers/c101_105/p582/OCT-NW-150-Octopus-Needlewheel-Skimmer/product_info.html For the...

    blenny issues...

Well, I did research it before adding him in and it's a 72g tank so I didn't think they'd have territory issues. Both of them are peaceful I thought and so I didn't think the lawnmower would be aggresive. I haven't seen the lawnmower be overtly aggressive against the tailspot and I think he's...

    blenny issues...

I've got a tailspot blenny and a lawnmower (sailfin) blenny in a 72g tank and since we've added the lawnmower, the tailspot has taken to hiding in the rock and won't come out at all. The tailspot is a little guy around 2" long and the lawnmower blenny is considerably larger (maybe 3.5-4" long)...

    Starting the process

I've got a 72g bowfront set up with an Octopus NW-150 (kicks a$$) and a 20g long sump--I wish I had used a larger sump. Every day we lose about a gallon and a half to two gallons due to evaporation and I don't have the auto top-off hooked up yet which makes it a real pain to keep the return pump...

WOW! Those are beautiful pictures of a beautiful tank! Some of those could sell as posters I think--36) is my favorite.

    How to kill Manjanos

I've got a really cool looking green one that I tried to kill with boiling water from a syringe and it popped out of another hole in the rock! I had two and the first one shrivled away when we zapped it with boiling water so I suppose that method has a 50/50 chance. I'll try and take a picture...

    RO/DI like watching paint dry...

OK I got the parts and hooked up the RODI to my cold water sink pipe and stuck the waste water tube down the drain (under the sink). I checked the pressure with it set up that way and it was only around 55 psi. To get the tank filled faster, and with warmer water, I hooked the intake tube to the...

    RO/DI like watching paint dry...

Thanks all! Yeah, it's looking like it's doing its thing...just slow. It's up to about 1/7th of a tank now...I'm going to bed. We've got a 12g and two 20g's going right now and everything is rocking, but I want to get them moved into the 72g! I'll post some pics when it's up and running. We're...

    RO/DI like watching paint dry...

I just got a 75GDP RO/DI 5 stage system to start filling up a 72g bowfront and man...it's like watching paint dry! This thing cost around $250 dollars and I'd be finished filling it up with distilled water from the grocery store at this point for the same amount of money! The filter itself was...
