    Reef Octopus Pump Upgrade

Thanks Mark for the links, and it was good talking with you last weekend about the Octopus Mods at BR. I've been rummaging through the old posts to find ideas, and this one helped a lot. I've just ordered the Gen-x 4100, and the euroreef nw, volute and venturi for it. I've also ordered some...

is it really broken for good?

Ya Gabbs, adding water won't work. You need to use pure white vinegar otherwise your cutting the acidic qualities of the vinegars abiltity to disolve a highly alkaline build up of precipitate. Buy a whole gallon for just a few bucks, and use a mixing bowl or something else that will allow you...

    Chiller or Air Conditioner??

My PCI 650 worked well, the tank got to 81, even thought it sits in the garage which is normally the coolest part of the house, but it heated it up to about 85-90 in there. I need to vent that differently. I have a 150 gal with 2 250 watt halides, and 75 gal sump/fuge. I recommend cleaning...

is it really broken for good?

If it's trying to spin, but can't. There might be a build up a precipitated calcium around the impeller. I would try soaking the pump and impeller in white vinegar for a few hours.

    Stainless steel clamps

Sounds like your pump output spout might be too small OD for the ID of the tubing your using. A barbed fitting works pretty well without a clamp if fitted correctly, although a clamp gives you peace of mind. I would also add that using aquarium sealant on the barbed fitting, and using a...

Post your tank size and flow numbers

150 gal Dolphin Amp Master 4000/3000 = 4000 (CL below rockwork) Sequence Barracuda = 4300 (CL Calfo STyle Manifold) Panworld 200PS/Blueline HD70 = 1700 (Return) 10000 gal/hr minus head loss. Looking at what others are posting, it sounds like I may need to add more flow

Anyone else use Brute 32 gallon buckets?

I use the brute 32, and 25 gal is up to the indentation at the handle, so I assume 32 is to the rim.

    Metal Halide Buy

Do these have some sort of UV shielding? I just went to halide last year from VHO, and used my original VHO with actinics and one daylight bulb with an hour or two a day of halide, then slowly increased the lighting period over the next month, but still had light shock to my corals. Luckily...

Where can I find metric pvc?

I'm looking for some metric to standard size pvc fittings. I've seen links to spears pvc parts, but no pics to see what I need to order for my skimmer. I have seen metric fittings here: http://www.customaquatic.com/customaquatic/searchhomekeyresult5.asp?offset=30 Anyone know where to get...

    Chiller or Air Conditioner??

Hey Jan, I would try and keep the temp swing to within 4 degrees I have to have a chiller these days and I keep the temp to within 2 degrees. Also, depending on your sump space and subsequent evaporation rate, I would go with the AC unit and fans when needed. I did this when I lived in my...

    Octopus DNW-200 Mod Questions

Oh, I see the size now...sorry I didn't see it at first. A mag 9 is probably enough for just a return if you have a lot more circulation in other areas.

    Octopus DNW-200 Mod Questions

By return water, I meant water coming from the tank, and having it flow to an area of the sump that is separated from the main part of the sump. This area will still flow into the main part of the sump, but I'll have a powerhead in that area to move raw/unprocessed tank water directly to the...

    Octopus DNW-200 Mod Questions

Ok, good to know Fishhead77 - Thanks I'm going to separate my return water from the rest of the sump and then have it flow into the sump so I can process raw water rather than just sump water. For anyone out there using the recirc design, how many gal/hr are you using to feed your skimmer?

    Octopus DNW-200 Mod Questions

Ya, the recirc's have a drain in the cup, so that was a nice improvement. To tell you the truth, I never ran it right out of the box. I spent $400, and as soon as it arrived, I had a drill in hand. I think it was b/c I'd read the 57 pages of that split thread above, and I was frothing at the...

Random "I can't sleep with all this on my mind" thread

Well, first off you've done an incredible job for the amount spent. Unfortunately, you've run into some real limitations for success based off of your equipment. Of course it all comes down to money, but without knowing more about what exactly you're dissappointed with, I jotted down some...

    calcium reactor ph

I keep my Knop s-iv right about 6.7, and I use Korallith media. It keeps my tank about 9 dkh, Calcium about 400, and ph is 8.15 - 8.30. I use 45 bpm for CO2, and drip effluent at 2 drops/sec. I don't think I can drop my ph that low, or for me necessary.

My sump is up and running

Wow, five pumps! Well, with 75' of both, I used reg pvc for the straight runs, then a coupler, then on the turns to keep from losing flow from additional head loss thru a 90I used the flex.
