    Shelf life of ASW mix?

I posted this elsewhere, but thought I would get some more opinions. I have a bucket of Reef crystals from someone that has been out of the hobby for quite some time. It is still factory sealed, but perhaps 4-5 years old. What do you think? TIA Take er easy Scott T.

    Creating A Biotope

My first marine setup was a biotope, although mind you, not all that exciting. It consisted of the flora and fauna of the NC marsh lands, and was pretty interesting for some time. I had mock pilings, all the indigenous inverts and fish, and the best part, everything was free (although to be...

    Evolving Corals?

Sorry I ahve missed a bit. For some reason, I didn't get any email notifications for a while... Good reading, I will try to soak it up and add some thoughts if I can. It appears that you guys have your stuff pretty well managed. My only questions is in regards to the concept of "adaptation."...

    Putting oyster shells in tank?

Wow, I had no idea. Any links with more information for the lazy (this evening I will have some more time)?

    Evolving Corals?

Also, here is a link explaining the difference between Lamarck's evolutionary theory and Darwin's. People often times confuse the former with the later. I did have a physics proffesor in undergrad. who was believed in Lamarckian evolution, and could actually make it sound pretty convencing...

    Evolving Corals?

Just to go back a bit (I skimmed, so I apologize if this has been covered): As far as corals evolving in our tank, I would say no, only because evolution takes time and mutagenosis (if we are talking about Darwinian evolution...Lemarkian is a whole different ballgame), at least from what I can...

    Let's discuss attaching those frags!

For my sinularia, I just get a small rubermaid dish, put some rubble in the dish, put it in low flow, and let the sinularia attatch on its own. I have also had succes with 2 lb. test fishing line... I know of someone else that uses plastic ties instead of rubberbands for the leathers and...

    Acceptable TDS reading ?

Are you measuring the water in a container? Sometimes containers can have residues that will bump up the TDS... Take er easy Scott T.

    Water Changes

I do 5 gallons every week on my 55 gallon. I feel it is almost neccesary to offset the amount of nutrients that I dump into my tank on a weekly basis. This combination has given me the best results as far as coral growth is concerned... Take er easy Scott T.

    Beginner Corals

Nikki got to the details, I skip over those, a Y chromosome thing for sure. BTW, how big is the tank? That might have some bearing on some of my reccomendations. Also, I would stay away from fish for another month or so. I tried to speed up the process of adding fish on my tank and it caused...

    How do you pronounce things?

I have heard actinic pronounced a number of colorful ways: A-tin-ic An-tic-nic Ac-tic-nic etc... And then there is Caluerpa... Oh, and the zoanthid thing...I learned my lesson from my zoology professors (not zoo-ology). Take er easy Scott t.

    Beginner Corals

Good starter corals: shrooms zoanthids/button polyps green star polyps/brown star polyps perhaps even a leather (although I might wait a bit) What to stay away from: SPS HTH Edit: Just saw you don't have a skimmer. Personally, I still think the starter corals will work but I would get that...

how do you feel about plenums?

I am not sure I follow where you are going (or to what you are reffering). Are you reffering to innate limitations of the system itself? Hobbiest error? What is going on in that head of yours Mike ;) Take er easy Scott T.
