    live sand/ crushed coral???

The simplest way is by Size and shape. Crushed coral is usually much bigger than sand (CC is usually 2-5mm, whereas even "coarse" sand is usually <2mm, and fine sand is <1mm.) Also Crushed coral looks like it's name--it looks like bits and chunks of broken shells and rock. This website...

    Where to get Base Rock?

Sure, I'm just looking for 15-20# worth of small pieces (trying to start-up a 20T nano)--so If you're buying alot, maybe I can just cherry-pick from the rubble. Though I'm still keeping my eye out for local live rock--so call this a bump for any live rock sellers too... Travis.

    Where to get Base Rock?

Tagging along, I'm in the same boat--looking for (affordable) base rock too. http://www.marcorocks.com/ seems to be highly rated on many forums--but S&H seems to be a little bit more expensive (for smaller shipments.) Marco's $3.60/lb (#15) w/S&H Ecorox $3.20/lb (#15) w/S&H Hopefully...

    something is very wrong....

There was a bad batch of IO buckets floating around for a bit--and high ALK was the main problem with them (+12 and higher; usually IO is lower, on everything) It doesn't account for any problems that you're seeing in the tank, but make-up water with high ALK and low CA/Mg probably won't make...

    Going skimmerless

Very Interesting! How did you "evaporate the skimmate" to determine it's dry weight? I can only think of 1 way to evaporate (with heat) but doing that with a cup full of skimmate sounds really gross... Travis.

mistake you dont want to admit

**But now I have swim against the stream, and post my BEST story! After the tank was setup and the coral genocide was over--I was too exhausted to clean-up. So I took all the tubs and just put them out in the garage (note: this was in October, unheated garage). The tubs were half-full of...

mistake you dont want to admit

My biggest mistake came from buying my first saltwater tank... (No, not from all the money I've spent on this "hobby" since then... though my wife may disagree! ) I bought my very first saltwater tank on CL--completely stocked--fish, corals, everything. When I broke the tank down...

    Gorilla Glue?

I'm starting to plan out my rock-work sub-structure for a new nano project, and I read on another board that Gorilla Glue is supposed to work on acrylic products... Has anyone tried it? -Is it reef safe? -Does it (really) work on Acrylic? -How strong is it? (strong as Weld-on? Or more...

Opinion: Do you like your tank long or wide?

I have an 80gal (48x18x22) setup in almost-peninsula-style (it is viewable on 3 sides) and I would trade it for a wider tank, in a heartbeat. Like everyone else has said, 18" wide makes rock-work difficult--esp. in a peninsula style--subtract 1-2" for cleaning-space off of each side, and you're...

Any one know a good DIY for a auto water top off

Personally, I have a sump-less tank, so ATOs w/ float switches don't work very well in my setup; I've used the timer+small pump method on my 80 gallon tank with great success for over a year now. Once you figure out your avg. evaporation rate, and then time your pump to match it--it's pretty...

    Best LFS in Seattle area?

(It's not really "Seattle" but...) ReefMystique in Lake Stevens/Everett is also worth a trip. Will had some great stuff in there on Saturday. (Not to mention 2 of the BIGGEST mandarins I have ever seen--Moby-Dick Mandarins they were! :eek2: )

Yellow Tang wanting to eat carnivore

I also use Julian Sprung's sheets (not stocked by my LFS-es, but found at a Petco)....it is a very durable product--does not dissolve into bits. I attach small strips of the "veggies" around a small cube of clear acrylic (bought at my LFS). The cube hangs in the middle of the tank via a short...

It has been brought to my attention

I try to drain my tank every 1-2 weeks....I stop when my corals start poking out of the water. (about 20% ;) )

    95 in Seattle mid week....

If you don't have ANY LPS/SPS corals, then I don't think a couple days w/o lights will matter, right? (Alot of us went w/o lights+power this winter, and the lack of lighting was the least of our concerns....) Obviously a new chiller would be best--but try finding one between now and...tomorrow...
