    ALK Calibration Fluid?

Thanks Boomer! (Right now My tank's water is testing at 9.0, 10.9 or 12.5 dKH--depending on which 1 (of 3) Salifert test kits I'm using!! ) Hopefully I can narrow down which kits is giving the accurate reading!

Vermetid worms, want to lose them

I've heard that you can just break of their tubes and you'll often catch them inside with it (use pliers or wear gloves when doing this.) I've got 2 (or 3?) v-snails in my tank now--I don't keep SPS--but my LPS/Softies don't seem to get bothered by the slime nets... I did have 1 v-snail that...

    ALK Calibration Fluid?

Is there a DIY stock solution that I can use to gauge ALK? (maybe using a measured amount of kalk powder or baking soda....) I just got a (new) Salifert ALK test kit and the results are showing +2.1 dKH  from my old Salifert kit!! (so I'm to trying to make a "control" solution to see...

I had to do some work in my tank and now my fingers are stinging

Actually quite the opposite--I thought of them after watching an episode of one of my favorite Discovery Channel shows-- Dirty Jobs: Cattle Rancher.... (let's just say searching for "Cattle Proctology gloves" doesn't get you very far on eBay.....) And Jan's right--some do break---but IME it's...

    Seattle aquarium water

That's the REAL question! (The "elephant in the room", so to speak....) Sure Seattle NSW is cheap and natural--but as we pollute our waterways, you could pollute your tank too--and then "natural" ain't so good... Think of all the crud that washes off our lawns (fertilizers) and streets (like...

    FedEx Rant

I had to do some work in my tank and now my fingers are stinging

I use these that i found on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Shoulder-Length-Plastic-Gloves-AQUARIUM-supplies-50pk_W0QQitemZ220099677451QQihZ012QQcategoryZ20756QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (Gaby's right though--it's cheaper in the long run to buy the heavy-duty ones..) I re-use them a couple...

    What do sponges eat?

Sponges are pretty darn good. (They look cool, they're not invasive, and don't usually posess any threats to anything--unless they're really big and then die, then they can become noxious post-mortem...) Many sponges are filter-feeders so you don't usually I have to do much for them. (If...

    does anyone know why?????

I have zero SPS frags, but I still have to drip KALK nightly to maintain my ALK levels and do go through about 10 gallons of saturated Kalkwasser a week... ...If he's got rampant coralline growth, he may need the KALK.... But I DO agree that KALK is a serious addiitve--and should be researched...

    Mini Stars Spawning!!!

Doubtful--wouldn't know how to catch them if I wanted to. Natural selection will take care of most--finite space, finite resources.... Right now I call them my "1-armed clean-up crew". (Cuz that's normally all I ever see--1 arm at a time poking out of thier holes...) But after this spawning...

    Too much Skimming

EXACT SAME THING happened to me too! (except it was a 7 gallon bucket and it still overflowed! ) The one thing I've learned: Never underestimate the power of a Remora! (It probably pulled out almost 10 gallons of wet foam out that night....) And 2: buy a wet/water alarm for that...

    Mini Stars Spawning!!!

Yup, it was pretty cool to be there when it happened.... But today it's "the morning after" syndrome... All that spawn in the water must have been too much for my little T. Crocea---it died sometime last night  (Woke up to find an open gaping shell, no mantle, and liquid clam remains...

    Mini Stars Spawning!!!

Springtime in the reef!:) Our (hundreds?) of mini stars decided that TODAY WAS THE DAY!!! (to procreate) Which meant EVERYONE crawled out of thier holes all at once :eek2: Started standing up on their tippy-toes  then twisting, swaying, squirming and then.... {insert funky...

where to buy the cheapest salt

That's a great tip about Petsmart! But seeing the livestock at PS always makes me :( :( Going to Barrier Reef, on the other hand, is always :D:cool: :D

    Dosing Alk supplement question

Trace minerals aren't implicitly bad (in fact many of us have to supplement our water with trace minerals lost due to WCs, skimming, etc.) The problem is there's a whole periodic table of elements out there and when the hard water is coming out of your faucet you don't know what minerals you're...

    Need some help!!!!!!

Yeah, you definitely don't want to leave your fish in the tank while the CC is removed--the water can get pretty foul... I would only add this advice: Leave yourself PLENTY of extra time!! (I know the last time I broke-down and reassembled my tank--I spent HOURS just fiddilng with the rockwork...

    Dosing Alk supplement question

You got it! (because if your top-off or WC water is already "hard" to begin with.... then no amount of water changes will bring your tank level down....)

    Dosing Alk supplement question

"Hard water" in the tank, or hard water from the faucet? (if water from the faucet) Treatment = RO/DI Filter
