    Pump Recommendation

I prefer the Dolphin pumps but others prefer the Sequence. Both are direct drive units and both have great reputations.

    pressure rated submersible pump?

To get 10 psi out of a pump you will need one good for 24 feet of head per eductor. I looked at the Danner Mag drives and the Mag 36 is down to 50 GPH at 23 feet of head. That works out to 9.956 psi at 50 GPH. At a 10 to 1 ratio, thats alot of pump heat for 500 GPH. Good luck with finding one...

    Skimmer Experience

Well after 3 months of waiting I canceled the order on the RK2 skimmer. I ordered instead an ETSS Gemini 800 from Custom Aquatic. What was delivered was disappointment in a box. The twin towers for the skimmer were both broke. The top chamber is to be bolted down with thumb screws through...

Sea hares....I want to learn more about them

Well Ed, I guess we did good. You have one, I have two. As to the size they may reach, well all I can say is I hope so. :)

I think I can, thought I could, so I did

Mojoreef, The top is made one piece 1/2" acrylic that was glued/welded down and then the access holes were cut out. Please note, the ends are wrapped/covered with 3/8 black to hide the side view of the overflows. Please excuse the dirty tank, I didn't have time to clean it before Ed came over...

I think I can, thought I could, so I did

Thanks all for the input. To put some minds at rest, before constructing I consulted with a local who has over 25 years in the plastics fabricating industry. (he owns a fabricating business). I also consulted with a state licensed engineer. (not some 4 year degree type, an actual mechanical...

    Custom Tank built in Tri-cities..

Actually Ed, I started cutting acrylic on Thursday, would have been done on Saturday but went to the Seattle club meeting. So I finished up on Sunday afternoon.

I think I can, thought I could, so I did

The entire tank is built with 1/2" acrylic, the overflows are 3/8. I thought the pipe clamps gave it a DIY look, don't you?? Actually, I was doing a leak check on the tank before installing the top. When I get a certain someone out here to take another pic I will post it. The tank is...

I think I can, thought I could, so I did

Hmmmmmmmm, Food for thought. Thats why I call this a "work in progress".

I think I can, thought I could, so I did

Mike, Here is a little better pic of the tank undergoing the leak test. You can see the bottom edge banding much better. When I get someone out here to take some more pics, I'll post some if the tank completed. Les

I think I can, thought I could, so I did

Hey Mike, As for the present, I just hope Ed remembers to grab it. The banding around the tank is just that. I ripped 1/2 black acrylic 2" wide for the bottom banding, and then boxed in the corners. I don't want to see into the overflows from my dining room. The bottom banding was something I...

I think I can, thought I could, so I did

After much thought and planning, I started cutting acrylic for my new tank. Despite all the laying out and drafting I did on this thing, after making the first cut on the acrylic I tossed out the original idea. When first planning this project, I wanted a large flat back hex, the one I had in...

My emerald crab eats hair algae, I have proof!

At one time I had 6 Emerald crabs in my tank. They ate the algae and then slowly starved to death. I must admit that I have only a few acros though.

How far can an external pump suck from?

One thing you may not know is the pump recommendations for maximum suction head is how high it needs to suck to get the water to the pump. When the pump is located below the water intake for it, this is not an issue. The only thing that would fall into play here is that total head loss through...

    Skimmer Experience

Actually Fins, I'm planning on installing it on my new 275 that is in progress. I have space limitations and the RK2 looked like the best skimmer for the size. I have an ETSS in place now and have no complaints about them. I had wanted to upgrade within the ETSS line, but found that the height...

One Bad apple...Dolphin vs Sequence Saga returns..

Point well taken, Don. I have on the shelf a pump that I first purchased for my big tank about a 1 1/2 years ago. (Dolphin Aqua Sea 5200) In order to keep the tank from looking like a jacuzzi I had to throttle the supply down. This in turned caused the water to climb, up to 92 one afternoon...

One Bad apple...Dolphin vs Sequence Saga returns..

Don, Are you seeing a difference in heat transfer between direct drive and mag drive pumps? With my Dolphin Ampmaster 4000, I have never seen any temp difference in using nozzles instead of open ended pipe. The problem with Eds pump was a factory mistake in installing the wrong motor, not in the...

One Bad apple...Dolphin vs Sequence Saga returns..

Ed, Could you please explain what Sequence told you the problem was? Don, I must say that changing pipe fittings out for spa flex will make a difference on total head loss, but are these pumps really that sensitive? When looking at my flow loss calculator, with 2" PVC at 3800 GPH, you only see a...
