    DSB minimum size for NNR?

That is the direction I was leaning towards. A 4" dsb would take a big chunk of volume away. Thanks, Mark

    DSB minimum size for NNR?

Is there a consensus on what is the minimum size horizontally that a DSB is effective for NNR? For example, I'm going to start up a 20g tall nano. Would the footprint of this tank provide enough area to provide many benefits over a SSB? Thanks, Mark

    Tips for successful refugium.

I have a 29 gal with a 20 gal long for a sump. The sump is divided into 3 sections, and I want to add some chaeto to the middle section. I am using a mag7 for a return, and estimate the system has a 300 gph flow, and I also have a small powerhead in the middle section to make sure no detritus...

    Tube worm or hydroid?

I have some critters growing in a clump on my liver rock which I have thought at times might be hydroids. Do hydroids retract like tube worms? These retract their heads when disturbed. Thanks, Mark

    sump

Anthony, I think your take on LR is correct, or at least in my case. I had a DSB in my sump, but it was not properly maintained and became a detritus trap. I removed that and left LR, but I saw that appeared to still be catching a lot of detritus, so I moved it to the display tank. Now I'm...

    Realistic Reef Tanks?

Wow, the cold-water tank is awsome. I'm reading Borneman to get a grip on what I can keep with what. I'm surprised we can keep anything in our tanks with all the chemical warfare.

    Realistic Reef Tanks?

Now to my untrained eye, in the Tahiti shots, while it is a vast carpet of corals, it looks like much of it is comprised of 5 or 6 main species. Are these species that tolerate each other well and compete for different types of food? Have they out-competed everything else?

    Realistic Reef Tanks?

Someone who has actually been to a reef, like Anthony, might best be able to answer my question. As reef tank enthusiasts, there is a tendency to want to recreate the colorful and varied panoramas we see in pictures of real reefs. As a result, we try to cram a variety of corals into a tank that...

    Best corals for 20g nano

Thanks for the info. Actually, after my experience with my 29g, I don't know why I thought a dsb would be a good idea. I had problems until I removed the sand bed, and now it's doing quite well. How about montipora, lobophyllum or caulastrea species? From reading Borneman, they seem less...

    Best corals for 20g nano

I have an empty tank just itching to have something in it. It's a 20g tall, and I have a 110w pc light that I can put on it, so I'm thinking I could keep some types of LPS corals. What types of LPS are better choices for a small tank? My idea for this tank is to have 3 or 4 corals, 2 or 3...

    sump

Anthony, re LR in sump. I believe the idea is to provide additonal biological filtration to supplement the display tank. I've seen this recommended many times on the WetwebMedia site. It is also meant to serve as a refugium in some cases. Mark

Pics of my 29g and stocking question

I've given the tree coral and the gsp to a buddy with a 125g. They should be happier there.

Perhaps keep the leather and the rest of the tank can be shrooms and zoas?

Pics of my 29g and stocking question

I have a 29 gallon that is just over a year old now. I intend this to be a soft coral/mushroom/zoanthid tank. The main tank has about 30 lb LR and there's a 20 gallon sump with another 15lb of LR and a cpr in-sump skimmer. 130 w of PC lighting. Current inhabitants are: 1 tomato clown 1 longnose...

    LN Hawkfish and shrimp compatibility?

I have a 29g with a LN Hawkfish, a tomato clown, some soft corals and snail/hermit cleaning crew. I would like to be able to add a peppermint shrimp or two to help with cleanup and aiptasia control, but am concerned that the hawkfish will make a meal of them. Can the two be kept together...
