    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

Thanks! The increased feeding is definitely taking a toll on my once pristine sand bed. I think I'll have to expand my clean-up crew.

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

Here's the sun coral today partially open with the lights on. I just finished feeding it a few pellets when I took these shots: I accidentally broke off a little piece of my red monti cap feeding it since I have very little room to move my hand above it. With a feeding dome made and...

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

New coral! I just bought a sun coral from B.R.A. Here it is about 30 minutes after adding it into the tank (lights were off so this picture was taken with flash): This is my very first non-photosynthetic coral, and I hope it won't be too difficult to keep it alive. It's already opened up...

How long did the aqualifter last with your kalk-dosing? I've been monitoring my calc/alk with the kalk dosing and it seems to be keeping up with my tank's demands. So I'm thinking of using kalk for a permanent solution since it appears to be sufficient. Setting up the right system is another...

    Barrier Reef's Elos System 60

And are you guys still dosing KoralColor, too? Seems too simple for such nice colors!

    Barrier Reef's Elos System 60

What do you guys feed the sps in this tank and how often? The colors of the acroporas in particular are always stunning to see in person!

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

I bought an aqualifter at barrier reef and decided to try out kalk dosing. Since my evaporation rate is pretty high (2% water volume per day), I'm hoping a saturated solution will be able to keep up. And while I don't need the MAME, and my pvc imitation works just fine, yes I am very much...

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

Thanks! The tank is on "standby mode" at the moment while I figure out what direction to take it in. I'm always wanting to upgrade stuff and buy more corals at the same time, but my budget for now allows me to do only one or the other. I'm thinking of ways to automate my calc/alk/mag dosing...

The end of my Nano tank

Sorry to hear about this... I'm going on vacation in a few months myself and I'm thinking it might be best to disconnect my sump from the display entirely. (Having all the equipment in the display tank won't bother me since I won't be there to see it.) It seems we can't breathe easy even...

Attmepted Break In - Looking For Info

They tried breaking-in twice within a span of a few days!? They must not be very bright. Not to mention they used rather crude methods: breaking the door handle, breaking the deadbolt and damaging the door. You'd think they would avoid another attempt since the previous tries get people...

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

I'll take your word for it, but now I'm not sure what you mean. What kind of surface agitation is necessary for good gas exchange? Crashing waves? I was pretty sure my second video showed enough surface movement for gas exchange (and my corals certainly haven't suffered from it). I haven't...

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

Here's another video showing the Vortech "breaking" the surface throughout: When you have a large tank, you would employ multiple Vortech's at different depths, with one close to the surface to create agitation like in the video above. These pumps have to ability to sync with each other via...

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

The wave-making mode may not have as much surface agitation but the vortech can definitely provide a lot of surface agitation for gas exchange. I run in on ReefCrest mode most of the time and that definitely breaks the surface, especially when it ramps up to maximum speed. The wave-making mode...

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

Yup. It's the only one, but it can push as much as 1800 gph and has a very wide flow and strong undertow. The Vortech mp10 is definitely sufficient by itself--even for sps--when it comes to nano tanks. I don't even have it at full power in the video--just around 75%.

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

New video! Click on the image below to watch the video (viewable in 720p): In the video, my Vortech mp10es is on short-pulse wave-making mode. I don't normally run it in this mode because of the noise and splashing. Most of the time, I have it on reefcrest mode at 75%.

    J-Ranko's 15 Gallon Rimless Nano

Finally got some new FTS since I installed the vortech mp10! As you can see, I had to move the gorgonian behind the right island, since it was too close to the vortech. Not sure if I'll keep it there, though.

Looks like my orange plate coral ate a stomatella snail! Just saw it this morning. I think it's a stomatella based on two things: 1. The outline, size and shape of it. 2. Two days ago I saw the plate coral nearly catch a stomatella snail out at night. The snail barely escaped. It seems...

    My 29bc Downgraded froma 40b

Very nice and clean looking "downgrade"! How are you liking the LED strips? They look very blue from the pictures. I'm thinking of maybe using a couple of them for actinic supplementation.
