What Would You Like to See Researched?

Thanks, I'll let you know if I need anything. I know the school has a lot of stuff, as it gets closer I'll have a good idea of what I'll need outside of what they have. I would think the school should have anaerobe culturing containers, but if not, I might take you up on your offer, thanks...

What Would You Like to See Researched?

So I ran the idea of testing the effects of P and N on obliterates and facultative bacteria by my bio teacher and he definitely liked it. I brought up the problem with isolating and culturing the anaerobes, and lucky for me, his doctorate is actually in the isolation of anaerobes. As the...

What Would You Like to See Researched?

Luck for me, the bio program at the college I'm going to is pretty well established, so I'm not too worried about the equipment, but I'll still have to check about liquid cultures. Finding and culturing the anaerobes is part I was worried about, but I was thinking that they may be in the...

What Would You Like to See Researched?

That sounds awesome, I figured that isolating specific bacteria would be a pain, I was going to ask my micro teacher what the best method to accomplish this was. I was thinking that by staining and determining wether they are positive or negative, then taking their shape and growth rate into...

    Nitrates Calculation (Take 2)

It took me about 2 months to get to the right dosage for my tank, and now, if I forget to dose for two or more days, I can definitely see a difference. From my understanding, vodka and sugar dosing accomplishes the same task, but vodka is more purified. I went with sugar because it is what I...

    Nitrates Calculation (Take 2)

As crazy as it sounds, using the sugar or vodka actually helps reduce the NO3 levels and some have reported increased coral coloring and growth. I can only really speak for myself, I have tried both. With the vodka, I used a smaller dose, but I also didn't see as much of a NO3 reduction as I...

What Would You Like to See Researched?

In somewhat of a combination of Rob and Mike's suggestions, what about bacterial population effects on water quality? I could set up an experiment similar to the one Rob suggested earlier and test aerobic, anaerobic, facultative and a combination of all three types and see what they do...

Nice, that would win a Nobel Prize for sure!

What Would You Like to See Researched?

I wold like to be able to relate my research with similar ocean environments, but I think instead of types of salt mixes I could look at the specifics of what each mix has in it, and how changes in salinity and needed elements effects corals. Great suggestion

What Would You Like to See Researched?

All three fantastic ideas, thanks. The lighting suggestion is one i was already considering, plus i can use it as extra justification to buy a new light. The different lighting, do you mean different wavelengths or different types of lights? I'm hoping I can relate my research topic to the...

Biology Club Cure the Kids Run

My biology club is putting on a cure the kids run for Seattle Children's on April 14th. If anyone is interested I posted the information on the calendar and attached the flyer below. If anyone has any questions just let me know. Thanks, Lee

What Would You Like to See Researched?

So I start my senior year for my biology major next semester and I have to do a senior research project. The three areas I can do my research in are genetics, ecology, or microbiology. I figure that I might as well incorporate my hobby into my project so what are aspects of reef keeping that...

    Nitrates Calculation (Take 2)

Mojo, So, when I am sugar dosing, is is the carbon source that is supporting the bacterial colonies? I didn't think most bacteria have mitochondria so they wouldn't need glucose for a citric acid cycle, but there might be other organisms that could use it. I do know that the addition of sugar...

    Thoughts About LED Lighting

Ok, ready to do this. I think I will go with the maxispect, I like the idea of building my own, but I just don't have the time. Can anyone make a recommendation where to over from? The price is about the same everywhere so if I can support a sponsor I would prefer to do that.

    Thoughts About LED Lighting

whew, it wasn't just me then. I figured that their website would just say, bit it doesn't. I can always email them, I did that earlier this week to ask if their mounting kits were metal or plastic and they got back to me pretty quickly. They said the mounting kits were aluminum.

    Thoughts About LED Lighting

Anyone know what maxspect mounting kit I would need to get for a 36" long tank?

    Nitrates Calculation (Take 2)

Mojo, Are the bacteria using NO3 as the nitrogen source for nitrogen fixation? This would make sense, but I'm not sure if the bacteria can separate the nitrogen from the oxygen. If the NO3 is the nitrogen source for the bacteria, is the remaining oxygen used in aerobic respiration as well...

    Thoughts About LED Lighting

Ok, that maxspect looks awesome, expensive, but awesome. Any idea how many units i would need for a 36" long tank? I was guessing 2.

How long is your radion? do you think it will light a 36" long tank?

    Thoughts About LED Lighting

This is a big question for me as well. I don't know if there is a difference being able to scale up and down intensity, and if there is a difference, if that difference is worth the price hike. I will look into the maxspec units, I haven't checked them out. As far as prefabbed units, the...
