Mega-Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover Replaces Skimmer, Refugium, Everything

I'd have to agree with Skimmerwhisperer that I wouldn't want this as the only filtration on a tank. I can say this with some experience as I actually ran a turf scrubber on my skimmerless 55g aquarium. It worked just fine, but the addition of a protein skimmer adds a lot more "wiggle room" if...

Member of the Month - April 2008

I've been around... Life's thrown a few curve-balls, but it just seems to reconfirm how much I love this hobby. I haven't had a real set-up in years but I just keep coming back for more! Are you going to go ahead with the upgrade? I thought you were just going to do it when you thought your...

That's awesome Jan, and well deserved! Gorgeous tanks and you've spent your time in the hobby obviously learning all that you can and helping others. Couldn't happen to a nicer person! Josh

    Dictyota Algae

Call me crazy, but this sounds like the perfect thing to grow in a refugium! Once the water quality increases, things like Chaeto or Caulerpa species have a harder time pulling nutrients out of the water. They really like "richer" environments. So, here's an algae that grows really well in...

    A Clearly Fabricated 270g

This is all true, but to play Devil's Advocate, there is another advantage to having two returns. That sort of redundancy allows for travel with a bit of piece of mind. If you are always going to be near the tank, then one pump is great for all the reasons that Maxx wrote, but if you EVER want...

DIY- Converting my stand into a sump!

Nice fix of a really good idea! Even though it's a PITA, building it in with glass removes darn near all of the problems associated with the original. Josh

    Katchupoy's (Cesar) 40Breeder X2 Reef Project

I'm with Todd on the paint versus stain thing. I LOVE the look of stained wood, but if you're just using contruction grade 2X material, several coats of paint will not only help the wood last longer, but make it look a bit cleaner as well. Oh, and my vote is for black paint. That's what I'm...

Safe carpet cleaner in tank room?

Then, of course, there's the other end of the spectrum where it's also about what YOU are breathing. I can't stand the smell of artificial perfumes and most of the other crud in carpet cleaners or laundry detergents or most other cleaning agents. I've used a couple of construction products...

Alternative to Slotting aquarium back for horizontal overflow

So, from my understanding so far of the horizontal overflows the main benefits are better surface skimming and reduced noise with higher flow. I'm also a planted tank person (small 20 gallon tall) and it seems like the flow rate through a sump would me MUCH lower than with salt-water reef...

    major problems

Man, I'm sorry. What a bummer. When the electricity goes through the water at line voltage and high current, everything gets nailed. I was working in my garage years back and was across the room from my aquarium when one of my fish triggered an avalanche that broke the glass heater. No GFCI...

    Algae trough Update

This is interesting... I have an old MMFI algae filter that I had set up on an older skimmer-less tank. I lit the hell out of it, and grew some sludge of various colors of brown, but I also had macro algae in the display (I know, but I was young and foolish.) Anyway, It's just been sitting...

    Firestone Pond Liner Reefsafe

Don, that's a great idea! I imagine it gets a few funny looks, but they are acrylic... If I didn't just buy a couple of the food grade pallet tanks from acrodesiac I'd be looking at HD or Second Use or someplace like that. I've heard good things about the grave liners in greenhouses on some...

    Coral Farming System

Check out the stickies at the top of this forum. Anthony has graciously provided links to many many articles on different aspects of aquaculture, including the use of natural sunlight. Also, I'm guessing that his book of coral propagation will have info also. I'll let you know when I get...

    Substrate for anemone propogation tank???

There are lots of great links in the "Stickies" section at the beginning of the forum that have LOTS more info on anemone propagation and many other great reads. Beyond that, what is being referred to is "indoor/outdoor" carpeting. Some people use astroturf type material and some people use...

    Lost my fighter

I tried keeping a fighting conch in my tank, but hermit crabs kept eating them and stealing the shell. So, make sure you have larger shells for the hermits. I was never able to keep both. Josh

    nano tank problems :(

Do a really good look around. I remember when I first started freaking out when I saw a hermit crab body on the tank bottom. Turned out that the little guy had just molted. The molt looks a LOT more solid than I would have expected. It's at least a possibility! Good luck! Josh

    refugium setup

Looks great, keep us posted on how this setup works out. I would like to try something similar, but I wasn't going going to put in as bright-light demanding corals. If that monti does well, it's going to outgrow that space quickly! The fuge looks great also. Josh

    Clam lighting

Frankly Don, I think you're reading something into my posting that isn't there. Let's take that to PM to avoid distracting the thread. Joker, to be clear, I would like to reiterate the following. We're all rooting for you. There's also lots of great info in the not so distant past threads...
