    Deep Sand Bed

Also, for a DSB you want really fine sand. The best kind is called oolitic or sugar sand. It forms in the ocean in areas of extreme calcium saturation and just literally snows out of the water. It's not only fine, but very soft edges also. I'd agree with Don about seeding the live sand...

    Deep Sand Bed

I doubt it would help your cal levels, but it might provide a good way to reduce nutrient levels in the tank. DSB as well as the live rock will tend to provide an anoxic zone in which nitrates will be reduced to nitrogen gas which will bubble out of the tank. This finished the nitrogen cycle...

    A question of ethics

I have been involved in several hobbies and professions either personally or peripherally where the pricing is very subjective, based on supply and demand, and the difference between a professional and hobbyist (or amateur) is fairly subjective. Several friends are or have been winemakers down...

    Sand

I haven't seen anyone being able to order Southdown up here, but not to say it's impossible. It would be great if it was. Boise is a bit fair to drive, but enough people go back and forth that it might be possible to make a deal! Josh

    A question of ethics

It looks like Firemouth posted while I was typing! Damn this Sunday-morning-tired-slow-typing-thingy! I totally agree with what you said! Josh

    A question of ethics

This is an interesting thread, and it seems that there are several things blurred together in the original post. 1) Buying wild colonies and fragging for a profit. 2) Having someone (Calfo in this case) frag a coral and use the known name to hype it, then sell the coral before it heals 3)...

    Sand

So far the playsand hasn't been available in the Pacific Northwest Home Depots. Don, didn't Mojo find some fine grade calcium sand that you and several others were using? I can't remember if that was for tanks or for calcium reactors, but either way the same source might have fine sand. Josh

    The grandson strikes again

Man, if it was monday, that's fast! It's amazing that Cu dissolves so fast. I know on the freshwater side I've heard of people tossing pennies in their tanks to try to "dose" copper for disease and they just sit there forever. Wishing wells and the like also. I guess that the Cu really likes...

    Depressing water test news!

Just my $.02, I've heard a lot of horror stories about switching salt mixes. They are all a bit different, and the change in chemical make-up can be really hard on your critters. Josh

    The grandson strikes again

Well, hopefully we can all learn a little from this. How long did it take for the pennies to dissolve? In other words, if this were to happen to one of us (and I have a 3 year-old) how long before significant levels of copper appeared in the water? Josh P.S. I am still in the planning...

    The grandson strikes again

Man Don, I'm sorry about the loss of your animals! Messes and leaks can be cleaned up, but it always hits me the hardest when animals in my care are in trouble. Good luck with saving what's left! Josh

    Tank stand (woodworking)

So, once you've got the scraped wood, is that the final "smoothing" step (for lack of a better term)? If you were using rough-cut wood, the sequence would be planing, scraping, then finish with whatever you use to to finish it? Looks good! Are you using the substrate instead of solid planks...

Hmm, having been to your house, I can't imagine! :D "But honey, it needed rescuing!"

Deep Sand Bed in a 24G AP

Like Curt said, there's lots of ways to go about getting a successful aquarium. Based on what you've said so far, it looks like you have a good plan. Once the tank has cycled, just be regular with the water-changes and be patient! Good luck! Josh

Deep Sand Bed in a 24G AP

Just to start off, I like sand beds in general. Ron Shimek, and I believe Rob Toonen, looked at DSBs in small spaces. Part of what makes DSBs work is a high density of bacteriovores and detrivores in the sand. Some of these are large and some are almost microscopic. They found that as the...

    ZeroEdge Aquariums Now Available!

I guess I'll see what's what when it's actually time to buy an aquarium (too far away!) Thanks for the info! Josh

    ZeroEdge Aquariums Now Available!

I guess I hadn't thought about how easy the access is... When it's time to buy my display tank I'll have to check these out again. I like the open top Elos tanks as well, but the top-down viewing on the Zero-edge is nicer. FWIW I'd be most likely to look at the three-sided tank. I'm...

    ZeroEdge Aquariums Now Available!

These look so beautiful. The only thing that keeps coming to mind is corraline and algae on both sides of the glass now. It just seems to double at least parts of the maintenance. What's the reality, any long term users? Thanks, Josh

    210 shark/reef tank

I think getting married in May is bad mojo for tanks. My anniversary is only two days after yours (I was married may 28, 2000) and on my honeymoon my overflow lost suction and my tank became a lovely waterfall in the carpeted living room! Anyway, it's tough being a young couple and...
