    Chiller or Air Conditioner??

You might be at that a while. It doesn't. ;)

Every Reefers Worst Nightmare come true -Warning graphic photos

If the Germans can't build/design a good one, no one can. I bought two Jager heaters after the first Aqua-Via heater crapped out. Good thing I did because the second Aqua-Via, I had laying around, didn't last a month. Hopefully they will last longer.

Every Reefers Worst Nightmare come true -Warning graphic photos

I was going to do a post about Aqua-Via's SS or Titanium heaters when I got around to it, this seems like an approperate time to mention my problems with them. I have had two fail in 6months. One failed on and the other failed off. Both of them failed in their controller box. Looked like a...

    Reinventing the skimmer flange

So just threads huh? How many revolutions until it is tight? 1/4? If it is anymore than that, then it would seem to me, to be a P.I.T.A. if you had an external waste container. In Euroreef's design, the coupler will spin independently of the top collection cup, right?

    Chiller or Air Conditioner??

You are absolutely right Don. I should have added that the AC would pretty much have to be run constantly. I think, however, with a limited budget, the goal here would be to prevent overheating from becoming a problem. Where as if one buys a chiller, your goal becomes, temperature control...

    Reinventing the skimmer flange

What is twistlock? I am unfamiliar with the design. Is it just a thread on the OD of the riser and a matching thread on the collector/reducer (what ever it's called)?

    Chiller or Air Conditioner??

This is not true. When you cool air, it looses its capacity to hold moisture. Water condenses on the heat exchanger (inside the AC) and drips out the back of the AC unit. That is why you have to install them with a slight tilt towart the outside. Jezzeaepi, What you may be noticing is that...

    New Reef tank!

I believe this is widely considered the best HOB (hang on back) skimmer, although I have no personal experience with them. AquaC Remora Pro

    New Reef tank!

I think most people accomplish their filtration through LR, a skimmer, water changes. Some also add algae harvesting, activated carbon, and a phosphate binder of somesort. I use a canister filter to run carbon and rowa-phos(a phosphate "remover"). It would be a good idea to remove the sponge...

    My last post

Peace Brett, I hope you find what you are looking for. :doubt: My opinion on this is (for once) middle of the road. Let me draw a parallel. Think about a 1hr meeting at work. They are usually boring, dull, and useless. Why? No one wants to pay attention (think history class). Throw in a...

    New Reef tank!

You may be misinterpreting that advice. What are your sources? We may be able to clarify. You may be looking at outdated or FW sources. There is more than one way to skin a cat but most successful-reefs are maintained without wet/dry systems.

    what is the truth

So your biggest span would be 30" front to back. Minus the width of two 2x4s (1.5x3.5s right?) so maybe about 27" by 20" is your biggest hole, right? And there is 30" of water above it right?

    New Reef tank!

Yes. Salifert kits are great. You will need to test for Ammonia, Nitrate, Phosphate, Alkalinity, pH, Calcium, Magnesium. You can hold off on the Ca, Mg, and Alk kits until you are ready for corals. I agree with the advise to dump the bio-balls. They are unnecessary. With that kind of...

    what is the truth

How deep (wide) is the tank? How tall? If you want a real answer I can run the numbers for you. You basically have a simply supported, uniformly loaded beam made from 1" acrylic. My guess is that you will be fine even if you consider creep (deformation over time due to a load). But a...

THAT water gets heavy! But it makes so much difference

How-a-bout only taking half-full buckets? You probably only end up with a half-full bucket once you bring it upstairs anyway.

THAT water gets heavy! But it makes so much difference

8.5 pounds per gallon. (before the salt)

Is it ok to mix synthetic and natural salts?

I think consistancy is the key. If you want to switch, ok, but make it a long term switch (for consistancy's sake) and make sure you know where the levels are for the new stuff (Alk, Mg, Ca, pH). You may have to adjust the levels depending on differences in contents. What are you using now...
