Mike, don't you have hard woods in there? Once I put hardwoods down I couldn't deal with the sound of an external pump. Have you considered an in sump? it would be as quiet as you could get without a remote sump. Me like quiet!!!

If you are concerned about twisting you could also screw and glue an additional 2x4 to the inside of the front and rear top to supports. That would provide additional support without using the center brace.

To funny!!! Looks like a type of Limpet. Most are harmless some are parasitic. Do you have recently cured live rock in the tank?

A six line wrasse will help at cleaning them up as well.
