If you are limited to just a hang-on skimmer, you may want to look into an AquaC hang-on. I was running a Red Sea on a 55gal and replaced with an AquaC. Made a big difference.

Your weight of a 40 gal tank is about equal to that of a side-by-side refrigerator, so I would guess that your flooring was designed to hold much more than that. Just my humble opinion. :D

A Mag 7 @ 4' of head is rated at 480gph while a Mag 9.5 is rated at 800gph. If your overflow is only rated at 600gph, the Mag 9.5 would be too much for you, IMO.
