Facelift for an old skimmer - need creative mod ideas

Yes, I did. I made it into an in-sump skimmer. I took out the middle piece so that it could fit in the sump. I got a sicce pump with mesh mod as suggested above. I drilled a hole at the top section of the skimmer so that the bubbly flow goes down the pipe. Works awesome, particularly with the...

    ways to reduce nitrate

    >i also realise that my damsel are haevily breathing..i dont knw why..?? What kind of circulation do you have in your tank? Heavy breathing is a sign there's not enough oxygen in the tank, which means you should increase your circulation. Put another powerhead or koralia pump and see if that...

    ways to reduce nitrate

I'd double check your ammonia and nitrate levels at a local fish store and get a second opinion. It's possible your test kits aren't reading right. If they are correct, there is something in the water that's not right. Instead of adding sensitive livestock like shrimp, add an inexpensive...

    ways to reduce nitrate

Fish can withstand a moderate level of nitrates. I talked to the curator of the Rain Forest Cafe in Southcenter, and their tanks had about 60-80 ppm nitrates. Since they weren't allowed to use Live Rock, he had to find always ways to reduce the nitrates, yet many of the fish were able to...

Facelift for an old skimmer - need creative mod ideas

    >wow, 4.5 x 36...wtf were these people thinking?? ...lol Windows 95 was the greatest product since sliced bread....15 years ago. :-) I'm sure the downdraft was great back then, but technology makes things obsolete. >and do you have a pic of the middle pumbing piece? is it filled with bio-balls...

Facelift for an old skimmer - need creative mod ideas

Thanks for the replies. Mark, your answers (and some follow up questions) below. >the body looks really skinny , what are the dim's of this skimmer? >the things it has going for it is the wide neck, and it's tall The dimensions are 36 inches high, and 4.5 inches in diameter. See picture...

Facelift for an old skimmer - need creative mod ideas

Hi Fellow Reefers, I have an old downdraft skimmer (Predator PDFS II) that I'm looking to modify. I would love your input to make it more efficient. In order for the skimmer to work properly in its current state, I need a pump that pushes a ton of water in it to make a small amount of bubbles...

    ways to reduce nitrate

Check out this great thread on Reef Central for a DIY Denitrator. It's a long thread but worth the read. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1288082&perpage=25&pagenumber=1 I'm using it on my 400 gallon Fish Only. My nitrates have been 40-80 ppm, even with weekly water...

The best cure for marine Ick??

Hi Shane and John, Did your ick problem go away? I thought I'd share my recent experience with ick on a 4 inch blue tang, a fish that is prone to ich and seems to gets ich just by looking at it. QT in hypo is a longer term solution (up to 6 weeks), which I did for this fish. However, for...

    square vs round cylinder skimmer

I bought a used DIY square 4 foot tall skimmer about 8 years ago from a LFS and it works just dandy. Keeps on a tickin' as long as the pump works.

Member of the Month - December 2007

Congrats Duane. The sign of a really nice tank is when it appears larger than it really is. When i first saw it, I thought it was a 300+ gallon. Your aquascaping makes it larger than it appears. Great job!

    Monster Emperor Angelfish question

Hi Lee and Ed, Thanks for the input. I certainly feel compassion for this fish. It reminds of the movie "Finding Nemo" where Nemo just wanted to go back to its ocean home. The culprit is humans. Those darn humans!! There is a very fine line between keeping animals in its native habitat and...

    Monster Emperor Angelfish question

Hi fellow RF's, I'm looking for some input from other owners of large angelfish. By the way, I asked several LFS's to special order me an extra large Emperor Angel for my 400 gallon FOWLR. The biggest that I've seen at most LFS's were about 6 inches. Eric at The Shark Reef in Silverdale, WA...

    Used pumps not working

Yup, there is water in the sump and in the pump. There are big bold words that say not to run the pump dry. Was a I sold a pump that already went bad?

    Used pumps not working

Thanks for the response guys. When you say "prime", I usually think of manually doing something to it to get water in them. If I connect them to my sump with the water line way above the pumps, doesn't that get water into them? Ist here something else that needs to be done?

Hello all, I bought 2 used external pumps (gen-x and mak4) from Matts125. Both were not working when I tested them. I took the parts out saoked them in watered down muratic acid and still, nothing. When I plug them in, I feel quiet movement, but no water pumps out. Can anyone suggest a way...

    Fraggin' Xenia

Not only can you frag it, but you can have it attach to small individual rocks and resell the frag and rock for probably more than you bought it. Take a look at the garf site as Jake mentioned and there is a picture of a field of xenia that they sell. When you cut them with a knife to attach to...
