Trying to figure out what I need to get started

Get a nice u tube overflow instead of the c style. A utube won't need the luft pump to work correctly. The lifereef is the best, the hurricane and eshopps are both mid level and work well too. Or you could drill before you get it all set up which would be ideal : )

Trying to figure out what I need to get started

^^ Agreed 100%. I would get the dry rock, no worry of infecting your tank with any nuisance pest.

    PCI PS200 Skimmer

Got a link or pic. I doubt it will be overkill for a 65g.

    Cone Vs. Cylinder

Personally i think the 160 cone will outskim the swc160 or swc200. I have ran all three and the cone will pull out more skimmate. Pro's on the cone are obviously transition, build is good, neck and air pull are matched well and the footprint is small. Dang near everyone can fit it. No start...

    over flow box ?

So a c style overflow you have to make sure your return pump, c syphon and luft pump are all working perfect. If you do this they won't fail. In a u tube overflow you have to make sure the return pump is on...... Tweeking means its not fail proof.

    Octopus NW-150 Skimmer Mod Question

The two things i did to that guy to double the air is taking a drill bit and boaring out the air venturi on the inside, then just meshmodded it. Those are the only two things i'd do to it

    too much flow?

Should be fine. I have 78x's flow in my 125g. Just have to make sure you don't have a fire hose blasting a coral. Wide gentle flow. Its just as important to your corals as your lights.

    protein skimmer for 10 gal

Get an eshopps. They are pretty cheap and it will be PLENTY for a 10g.

Replacement Pump for PS-55 AE Skimmer

You could try something like this http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ASM-G500P&Category_Code=ASM Or an otp1000 pump or you could pry use a meshmoded mj1200 you mod yourself as that would pry cost you $20.

    needle wheel impeller modification

The first thing you need to worry about is the eco rusting terribly in your sump. I've ran that exact pump and it has a huge heat sink on it that is not rated for sw. You can meshmod it and build a venturi out of pvc and use a hose barb for the air injector.

    skimmer mod...am I nuts???

Those octo's do great with the sicce pw. 30-35scfh is all they can take and work well. The QO will take the sicce pw but it doesn't have a deep enough volute to work right, believe me i've tried all the pw's in them and all are to tall.

    Devastating Tank Tragedy

Just saw this today. Really sorry man. This hobby is so rough some times. I'm happy to see some animals survived for you. SPS are pretty tough so some good stable setting can bring them back. The alk being that high though is rough. I'm really glad this isn't another fire thread though...

is there a better skimmer for the $$$ than this for a 300g

Back when i posted that in June, there were tons of pump issues and crazing. They have fixed them up since and they work pretty good. There are still a few pump probs, but no more than the usual. They are a nice budget skimmer.

    Green Thatch ID

If its growing super fast i would isolate it immediately before it takes over your rockwork. Then find out if its good or bad. Generally any algae that grows that fast is not a good thing.

SPS tank Need advice on a new Skimmer

I've ran nearly all the hot's out there and all the one's mentioned above. For a 55g i'd suggest the mc600, bermuda rogue, wm2, swc extreme hot, atb cone hot or the swc500i hot. All will handle that size of tank. The one's mentioned above like the bm are very nice but not for over a 30g tank...

    silica sand safe for aquariums

My thoughts on silica sand. I added it after reading all the " i've used it for yrs" and "its fine, just not as expensive" and after having it in my tank for a year it leached phosphates like no other. It crashed my tank and killed off half my sps and lps. It caused huge problems with HA...
