HELP!!! Tank wiped out 15gl Fowlr tank

Personally I don't believe ANY additions should be made until you are positive the problem has been fully solved, and then some. In your case, adding more than those 3 fish you have already will be overloading your 15g tank so I definitely wouldn't be adding the molly. Your hermit probably won't...

HELP!!! Tank wiped out 15gl Fowlr tank

I would say that probably because he is just learning. Nothing to be ashamed about. Learning process can be complex, and many of us I think tend to forget how little we knew at one time. It can take some time to know what questions need asking before tasking, and sometimes errors happen even...

HELP!!! Tank wiped out 15gl Fowlr tank

Your post is typical of a troll wanting to stir up sh_t on a forum because you say you have all that stock in such a small tank. In addition to what is spelled out, you list several by just short form letters which many or all of us don't know what they actually are, and if fish, it's even a...

HELP!!! Tank wiped out 15gl Fowlr tank

If you ARE for real, then first of all stop buying from the LFS you bought all this from. Either you are a troll, or the store is a rip off. Find another that won't stick you with something that doesn't belong in that tank, but instead, advise you on how much you can put in it and what can go...

    Is it Mysis or Mysid?

Usually the term mysid is used for salt water ones and mysis for fresh water.

Almost ready to give up. GHA has kicked my butt

I solved it by vacuuming my sandbed. I did 1/4 of the sandbed about every 5 days until it was finished, and then did 1/3 once a week for a few months and the hair algae all went away. After that, I made sure to vacuum the sand bed every 5 or 6 months to keep the nutrients from building up again.

    How Raise the Alkalinity

Every tank is different so you have to experiment until you see how much is needed. Obviously best to do smaller amounts until you find out what your tank has need of. AGAIN THOUGH, don't do it unless you find it isn't going to be helped by proper gas exchange.

    How Raise the Alkalinity

Additives are NOT the answer if gas exchange is insufficient. I should have also mentioned that as the calcium is already sufficient, a two part addition is not needed, just the alk part IF ACTUALLY NEEDED. In that case, the baking soda works just fine is is cheaper than commercial buying.

    How Raise the Alkalinity

First thing to do is to take a water sample from the tank and place it outdoors with aeration for an hour or two. If the pH reading improves even by .1 from before aeration and after aeration you have a gas exchange problem. IMO, an alk reading of 7 should not by itself be a problem for pH. You...

Help change the way Brine shrimp is kept/sold at a store.

I started using rock salt, but eventually switched to using the sodium chloride evaporated pelleted water softener salt because it is so much cleaner when dissolved. Something you might find interesting is that if you are keeping adult brine any length of time, they will produce live born...

Help change the way Brine shrimp is kept/sold at a store.

FWIW, they don't do any better in the synthetic saltwater than they do in the cheapie 10 parts sodium chloride water softener salt with one part epsom salts and buffered with some baking soda. (baking soda temporarily drops pH and then settles out in the 8 range. Baking it a 300°F for a hour...

Help change the way Brine shrimp is kept/sold at a store.

Research was a lot harder back then as it was before I even got interested in a computer. Libraries were the only source of information and fortunately the University here was helpful back then.

Help change the way Brine shrimp is kept/sold at a store.

Wow, you certainly want to make a lot of work for yourself. Yes, it IS a lot of work to maintain adult/juvenile cultures, and it's certainly more costly if you are using conventional salt mix for the culture water. For the water, just buy sodium chloride water softener salt (evaporate...

    What type of copepod?

I too would bet on mysids. They look like baby shrimp.

    New Posts

Thanks! It's only a big thing when I'm away for a few days and that's not normally more than about 15 to 20 times a year so if it's a lot of work to accomplish, I'll live without it.

I guess I'll just have to keep doing it the way I am at present. The "New Posts" link always brought up any postings since I last signed on, which some days is after a few days off. Cookies enabled it to start where I left off. The "Today's Posts" and the "Recent Activity" don't do this for me...

I'm wondering if the "New Posts" link can be put back on the forums index page. I'm sure it used to be there. Right now, I have to click the "Quick Links" and then the "Today"s Posts" to see the link for "New Posts".

Breeding brine shrimp in my refigium??

Well, I don't see where I said all the information was wrong, but the fact is, that what I stated is NOT just my observations. If you read the documentation it is fact about nutrient, variation of hatch out, the need for enrichment for fry, the predation factor, salinity. I'm sorry, but to state...

Breeding brine shrimp in my refigium??

So much wrong information!!!! The best advice was to "seed your fuge & tank with Copepods and Amphipods". You can also add other life forms like gammarus and mysids for two. While it's extensive, the most complete site for artemia (brine shrimp) information is in the Manual on the Production and...
