    light question?

My tank is in a built in cabinet. There is 15 inches of clearence an a fan venting out the top. Would that favor one fixture or another? I like the idea of the Nova extreme pro, but they discurage cab applications. Do the Teks need fans? The 4 bulb Tek has the same wattage as my current...

    light question?

My tank has been up for about 8 months and I am slowly working through the new guy issues. My tank is 48long, 13wide, 19deep. I have been using a dual Satellite light fixture with 260w total. The fans are loud, I have gone through a couple ballasts within a year. Ready for a change. I would...

    Epoxy and glue

As I keeping stuff to my tank, I have been using the two part epoxy to join rocks and frags. Lately, my snails have just been knocking stuff back off the rocks. The Epoxy does not seem to be very sticky, and the superglue gel seems to only work from a dry surface. Any suggestions? I also see...

    rio pump

Ok- you guys scared me about rio pumps with a previous post. I have been up and running for about 6 months, finally getting the alge thing figured out. Fish, coral, anemone, looking happy. I would hate to kill off everything with an oil spill. I have been using a rio 3100 from my sump, back...

    Hungry Crabs

I was always a little bumbed that my live rock didn't look like those in the pictures you see. Mine looked bleached and dead. I just added a new, colorful piece of live rock into the tank. Within one day the crabs have stripped pretty much everything off the rock. Is that normal? Does that...

    Really bummed

Thank you guys for the reply. The anemone is toast. Got rid if the big parts this morning. I will do a good job cleaning and start water changes tonight. The tank got pretty slimey last night. Longer term, would it make any sence to build a closed loop system using powerhead pumps and pvc...

    Really bummed

Last week I added a bubble anemone to the tank. Looked like it was doing great. Last night it got sucked in to a powerhead, gross. I cleaned out what I could. Is there anything I need to do to the tank? Did I do something wrong? Is there something I can do to prevent it from happening...

    Green Film

Hi Pickles, I'm a new guy too, I have had salt water fish for years, but trying to clear things up to make a reef has been a huge learning curve. I have been really fighting algae too. I bought an ro/di from "the filter guys", and it has made a really big difference. Its still slow going, I...

    Well Water

I am begining to move towards a reef tank. (I have a few damsels and a hawkfish now). I have been cleaning up the water, I added a protein skimmer, then added a couple snails to see if they could help with alge. Snails lasted just a few days. Despite repeated water changes I could not get the...

    switching to reef

Thanks for the reply. How much lighting do you need to cycle live rock?

    switching to reef

I am hoping to convert my old school saltwater tank to a reef. I have some loyalty to a couple of 14 year old damsels and a hawkfish. Can I cycle live rock, sand, and a refugium, in a seperate setup in the garage, then redue the display tank when its fully cycled? Thanks.
