    Cheapskate Chilling Techniques

I'm struggling to keep my low-dollar, polyp/fish/live rock tank under 80°F on warm days and don't have the bucks to drop on a chiller. Anyone have any novel or amusing techiques for keeping your tanks cool? Steve

What should one look for in a Marine Store

One with a Cheapskate Tank I like a store that has an impulse-buy/cheapskate tank. That would be a tank loaded with $20 and under bits or rocks with shrooms, polyps, etc. How about one with an orphan tank?

pressure vs. circulation applications what's the difference?

Impellor Design Pumps are designed to input energy into the fluid. This energy comes in many different forms: kinetic energy (velocity or flow rate), potential energy (pressure), thermal energy (heat), etc. Velocity and pressure are good. Heat is bad. If you look at your pumps specification...

    What R these globules?

New Development. Nikki and Horge, I want to thank you for your input. I thought it was Botryocladia skottsbergii, from the 9th picture on Nikki's link, but when I saw Horge's second picture, I changed my opinion. I always thought this stuff had a very dense cluster and stalk system, almost...

    What R these globules?

3-7mm in diameter My "focus free" camera is very good at focusing on the front of the tank, no on the objects. That aweful pictures was actually the least crappy of four. The individual globules range from about 3mm to 7mm in diameter. It came on some live rock, and at first was just two...

    Shell-less/Chiton pics

I took some more pics this morning of two of the shell-less, snail-looking things. They move real fast, for something that looks like a shell-less snail. For three more pictures, please go to: http://home.comcast.net/~s.demchak/chiton.htm

Arrow Crab or Banded Coral Shrimp for Bristle Worms?

Shell-less snail-looking thing It sure looked like a dark snail that had its shell ripped off, but I doubt that is possible without killing it.

Arrow Crab or Banded Coral Shrimp for Bristle Worms?

Bristle worms are like... ....cockroaches. I'm sure they have a purpose, but they gross me out anyway.

Arrow Crab or Banded Coral Shrimp for Bristle Worms?

Pink&Gray Bristle Worms Yep, they are pink and gray. If the consensus is that they aren't too much trouble, then they stay. I did see that shell-less snail-looking thing (on the right side of the photo) cruise right over one of the bristle worms without any further sign of distress. My...

Arrow Crab or Banded Coral Shrimp for Bristle Worms?

I discovered this morning that I have bristle worms....er...my tank has bristle worms. I did a bit of web searching and saw that Arrow Crabs and Banded Coral Shrimp are used to control bristle worms. The tank plan is: live rock, polyps, macro algae, and anemones. Does anyone have any...

    Acrylic Scratch Removal Kits

Thanks for good advice! I guess my only question was that I wasn't sure how effective these kits are. I didn't want to buy some snake oil. Also, the industrial and automotive restoration folks probably aren't dealing with a live-rock slide gouging their applications. Thanks, Steve

    Acrylic Scratch Removal Kits

I just picked up a cheap, badly scratch 55, with a built-in wet/dry. Has anyone had any success using the scratch removal kits with "8 grades of crystal polishing pads from coarse to very fine, a polishing sponge, polishing cloth, bottle of final polishing liquid abrasive, storage case and...

    Jebo Lighting?

Jebo 4*55watt I bought a Jebo 4*55watt off of Ebay. The seller's service was great, but, in my opinion, the product is not great.....at all. The "actinic" bulbs appear to be blue, not actinic. The lights and ballasts are too tightly packed and run way to hot. There isn't remove to properly...

MH vs. VHO lighting for newbie w/reef!

T5 fluorescents? I don't know if this would be a complete solution, but I got two 10K and one Actinic 47" 32watt T5 fluorescent bulbs and complete hardware for about $100 from The Fish Store.
