“Ina’s Reef” Acrylic 150gal(60”x24”x24”) Work in Progress, Guidance Needed. !!!

Finally it’s an acrylic tank. After the back breaking wall papering, carpentry and house transfer that prevented me to join threads in RF for almost a month we are now in our new home. And “Ina’s Reef”
is about to be born. I say this because much needed plumbing, filter and flow management is still needed. Equipment’s are still to be built DIY Style. So please bear with my questions as I bug you with a lot of them as I build this Dream Tank.

I plan to make this my “Home Thread”, as I will be posting different subjects on different threads.
So one’s in a while I will edit this to create a link for the new ones. It is also here that I will post the progress of this tank for months to come. With RF’s indulgence of course.

To begin with let me tell you where I’m coming from. I have begun the SW hobby about 8 months ago with a 55gal. and a 30 gal. Reef Tanks. These tanks went through a lot of problems from cyano to hair algae, bubble algae to high nitrate. Well this is what you expect from an ill equip freshwater tanks and most of all a un-inform hobbyist to plunge into the business of reefkeeping with a gung ho mindset. Hopefully this time around I’ll give an engineering approach and give justice to the seriousness of this endeavor. Then with enough time and patience will become a way of life in my reefkeeping world.

My family and I are grateful of the vast resources that Hong Kong can offer being a resident for over 10 yrs. All the years of leaving here I have come to appreciate the diversity of life it offers. The LFS shops here are fully stock with different kinds of fish and corals a reefer could dream of and mostly located in one area. I am a Filipino and growing in an island like the Philippines means a lot of happy memories spent in the northern beaches. The southern part would have more famous diving sites though. Again as a child I had a great time snorkeling on the beaches and I still remember of wanting to bring home this beautiful fishes at home. Today I have a chance of creating one and I hope to make it right this time with your guidance.

Mojo your plumbing designs have inspired me to aspire for an acrylic tank. I have found a builder who is professional working with acrylic for design work and with a fairly reasonable price I ask him to make a tank for me. Admittedly this is his 1st time to do a tank this big and I think he has done a tremendous job making sure this tank is rigid with all the bracing. Although I had a friend who I ask to make the overflow vents. The construction went well and I have taken the tank from the shop in a rainy day of 19t h August Friday. I have yet to do a water test to know if the glue that he used could stand to the pressure of the water weight. For now I’ll let it cure properly while I shop around for the plumbing and pump material.

My plan is to have an SPS tank but with the current softies that I have it will be a mix one. Not sure if
the pump that I have in mind could handle the tank to make it a high energy one.

My construction plan will be to design the CL and Overflow have this done and move on to the sump area where construction of skimmer will go on and then on to calcium reactor and phosphate reactor. I have plans of trying the Zeovit System but this will come on a later date as I am having a supply problem with the dealer in HK beside my stocking is low yet. For the first year I have to do things manually and as things
improve aquacontroller will be in order.

So please join me in the building this tank and follow the tank works in progress. Let’s have fun and get to know each other better. May this also help the up coming hobbyists as I continue to learn the trades of reef keeping.Mabuhay!!!

I wanted to be the first to sign on to your new thread, I look forward to seeing your progress, it is always exciting!

Congrats & happy Reefing!
:p

Scooty, Thanks! I'm planning to up the system by the end of next month.so please stay with me. I know you are the man to consult on electricals so watch for my threads on this topic. :)

Thanks Neil, This is one stage of the hobby that is challenging and satisfying specially when it is the first time you are going to do it. See you around!

Here are the corals that are in my 30gal tank. I remove the live rock for cooking as I'm battling hair algae infestation. Some of them have been affected by the transfer and hair algae as I didn't have time to take care of them well while doing construction work on the new house.

Hello Ken, I expect Jiddy to drop by anytime now :D I've been following your thread amusing threads and looking forward to it as well.More power to you! :)

Skipper J - I look forward to this tank coming together!

Here is a link for those following the thread, to Skipper J's question on plumbing this tank. Post #154 Plumbing Workshop

On the coral colonies with hair algae, are you doing any manual removal of the hair algae, so when they are introduced to the new tank, the chance of the hair algae making a comeback is reduced?

Hi Nikki! Thanks! Yes I used to do it but got busy and it grew again. Before the tear down I had phosphate remover in the canister filter that went over due and leach back PO4 plus nitrate went up compounding the problem. After reading how you battled your algae problem I started doing manual labor again :D My worries now is how to transfer this coral to the new tank with this condition.I'm afraid to contaminate it and battle the same problem again. My 55 gal tank which is to be converted to a sump do not have the same problem though. :)

On the SPS colonies, I'd just cut them off their bases and either attach them to new rubble pieces or glue them on the new live rock. With my tank, I don't want to contaminate it with new algaes (I have enough problems with my own, let alone a Hand-Me-Down algae), so any incoming SPS gets cut off its rock/plug/whatever, before it goes in my tank. That way, I can control to a small degree new nuisance algaes that I might introduce.

Yeah you're right, for the coral that have algae attach to them I'll hold them to this tank and if they don't recover I'll cut my losses and get a new frag that is algae free.I'll try to join you in your algae thread. Thanks Nikki! :)

Ooooooooohhhhhhh Goodie Goodie , I'll also be tagging along, I'm planning tank this size in about 4-5 months.. Can't wait to see more. Good Luck w/everything and I hope all goes well.

Here are some pics during the making of the overflow. I ask my friend Teddy to do it for me after work. Slots are 5.5mm opening and 15mm separating each slot. The maker couldn't fine a black acrylic so we made it all clear.I'll just have to stick a black tape at the back to hide the plumbing.
