Eric I dont think that rio will run both skimmer and return so another pump for sure dedicated to the skimmer. On your plan if I read it correct (refuge on top of sump, all water though the refuge then to sump) is that the way it worsk???

Mike

I am trying to rid myself of the RIO. Need a new pump that will cover my return and skimmer? I have the Iwaki 40 rxlt available for that but I think it isnt enough pump. I have a 2100 for my CLS ordered with my new tank. Let me know what you would use for the pump/skimmer combo.

Yes, I plan to have all water from tank go through the fuge first then to the skimmer then return to tank. Where should the skimmer out be placed?

Thanks.

Eric you have a little problem with the skimmer. If you place it where ou have it on your drawing it will suck any life that you may be wanting to grow out of the refugium. I would stick the skimmer pump in the first chamber of the refugium where the tank water comes in. that way you are getting after the dirtist of water. then out put it at the first chamber of the lower sump...that make sence???

I would run seperate pumps for the skimmer and the return. A little more safety thier.

Drain sizes....

OK, I think I have a handle on the majority of my issues, thanks everyone.

Now on to the overflow drain size. I had planned on having dual 1" drains with 1.25" durso standpipes. I was just on his site and he mentions that having two in one overflow CAN be tricky to setup. If both are not exactly the same size they can fight each other for flow. That being said should I opt for a single 1.5" or 2" drain instead? My overflow is 6"x10" and I dont/wont have much room as I also want to run my return through the bottom of the overflow, though this is not set in stone.

Which will give me more flow to the sump:
dual 1"
single 1.5"
single 2"

I would run a durso on all of these.

My return pump for today anyways will be an Iwaki 40rxlt.
