So my wife and I are new to the hobby, and just purchased a 100 gallon tank, the stand has a couple minor problems(ie water damage, broken hinges, couple holes in the side from some pipes, general TLC) So I was wanting some ideas on what to do, I want to get the tank how we want it, so I know this is going to be a long process, but all suggestions are welcome. I know its our decision in the long run, but like I said we're just now starting out and wondering what some more advanced people would do. Thanks.

Is this the 100+ tank from fly and reef?

I would start by using a lot of white vinegar. I would make it so the upright stiles between the doors are removable as well. Just cut and use screws to hold them in place. Make sure to mark where they belong. That way you can access your entire tank underneath. Then depending on your goals look at pumps and lighting...ventilation in the canopy if you go with MH.

Yea its the same tank from Fly and Reef, got it for a great deal! What does white vinegar do? It came with a nice pump.

OK.

White vinegar will really help make sure the equipment is clean before you introduce your newly purchased live stock to the tank. You'll also want to soak the pumps in white vinegar to break up any calcium deposits you might have from the previous reefer.

Metal Halide is a type of lighting. If I remember right this tank has T-5 lighting right now, which is fine to a point depending on the type of coral you are going to keep.

You need to sit down and really think about what type of corals you want to keep if any. This will determine the lighting type you'll need and your flow requirements.

It is better to build the tank right the first time than redo it....trust me.e

I think the stand is sufficient for the tank, but it is really up to you. I build my stand and way way over built it lol. It does allow you to customize some things, but the costs start to add up.

I would probably just fix the doors and possibly add some nice handles to the canopy and stand. It can make a huge huge difference on the looks.

The Stand and Canopy look like with a little love could be very nice. Well worth the work to save all that money to build/buy a new one. I wouldn't concentrate on patching holes until you are to the point where you know how you personally end up wanting to plumb it.

So I think we decided to stick with this stand, just sand it down and stain it a darker color, new hinges, and knobs and handles. I will kepp you guys updated with pictures, probably start this weekend.

Have you guys made an pregress we really do like pictures. I was also going to say that T-5's are just fine I chose them over MH and I'm glad I did. I like the way my corals look better with them.
