My first try at pics. Let me know what you think. Any suggestions. I just used auto focus with the flash off.

I think you've done very nice for a 1st attempt at taking pictures!

I have an absolutely horrible time with my little cheap-o digital camera taking pictures of my tank myself. With the flash on, everything gets washed out, usually with a flash reflection in the front glass. With the flash off, things don't seem to want to focus for me. I'm sure I just need to learn how to use the camera that I have... and I'd get much better pictures then. Its all about practice... and hopefully some basic tips to help us newbies. :D

Taking pictures of Reef tanks is really challanging.

The first big issue is the light. Dispite your thinking that "these halides sure are bright" in photography terms they're really not. Then they are usually >10,000 K which is normal upper limit of the white balance of most digital cameras.

With the lower light factor, the aperatures open and the shutter speed increases. This causes movement problems and shallow depth of field. So you need to turn off your pumps and use a tripod when available.

Then there is of course the glass. Reflectionsand refractions, oh my. The glass in my 240 is 3/4 of an inch thick. I have to be directly perpendicular or I have problems.

You could get rid of alot of the haze in your photo with some good post processing. I recommend photoshop elements. It has most of the normal features of photoshop without the huge price tag. Even a simple autoadjust will remove the white looking film in your pictures.

Here is your picture after a simple auto adjust in photoshop.
