i am having concerns about heat in my new tank..i have a mag12 that will be my return pump..i also have another mag12 that will be my pump on my closed loop...the return mag12 will be submerged in my sump..the closed loop mag12 will be on the outside behind the aquarium....Brenden warned me about heat issues with these pumps and he was right..i had one in my 55g sump..i have been using it for flow while curing rock.the water was very warm with just that pump..now besides these two mag12 pumps, i have the pump that came with my Octopus skimmer...anyone have any thoughts on it????

I've heard the same about mag drive pumps. I have a mag950 and a mag5 running in my setup now (submerged) but they don't run hot. The bigger sizes though, I've heard do sometimes. I use Quiet One pumps externally and before they ran pretty cool, but now I can't touch them...Who knows what pumps to use these days

i think the pumps will be fine for now because it has been in the 70's-80's here and getting cooler..i am worried about next summer though..it was 100+ alot of the days

That's plenty of time to save for a chiller if you end up needing one. Fans may do the trick for you as well though all by themself:)

i am going to put 2 of those 4 1/2" stealth fans in my canopy..i may put one or two over my sump as well!!!

Yeah...Fans sucking air out of the top of the canopy helps as well because as you know, hot air rises. Here's how I had my canopy loaded with 5 fans when I had the 75gal.

Attachment 1 shows the 3 fans that suck out hot air

Attachment 2 shows how I had the fans mounted on both ends of my tank blowing in cool air

Attachment 3 shows the fan I had on my sump (eventually I removed the black back off of the stand as well)

Attachment 4 shows the vents I used.

i was wondering about the direction of the fans..i didn't know if they should be blowing in or out..i guess both ways would be the best way

One of the best fans I have found for using in a sump area are the 7-8 inch clip-on fans. They move alot of air, very easy to mount (clip-on) and are fairly cheap. Around $12 to $15.

both ways is normally the best way.... but anyways,i put 2 fans on my hood. one bringing air in,and the other blowing air out. makes my lights cool to the touch , and makes the water 2* cooler!!

Yeah...Mine was a clip on as well. I see some people use them on their canopies as well.

i may try the clip-on-fan idea for my sump....i have a fan right now that i could use in there

I would get a large external pump and use it for your closed loop but also pipe it to your skimmer. That way you are still getting a lot of flow and only using one pump. I use a sequence dart and my flow is great and it gives off very little heat. But then again my tank is a 210 and in the basement so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I wouldnt connect a skimmer to a closed loop, return pump maybe.

AquaMedic makes a line of low power low heat pumps (OceanRunner series), they do add a little heat but not much comparing to other similar pumps.

Totally agree. Unless your skimmer is above the tank, you could back-siphon your tank nearly empty in the event of a power failure

If you tied your skimmer into the CL it wouldn't be a CL anymore, that would be a bad idea like mentioned above.

Ron, I run a mag12 as a return pump on my 120g, externally and it runs fine. I have a fan blowing across the open top of the tank and my temps stay ~77Never more than a degree less.

The octopus skimmer pumps are the same thing. the biggest one is very simliar to the 3500. same manufacturer.

I use a mag 12 on a closed loop on my 40 gallon zoanthid tank(30"x18"x18"). I also use a mag 9.5 and a mag 7 as return pumps which are submerged. I have a clip-on fan that blows across the top of my tank and I really don't have any heat issues with it. I also have a 250 watt mh light on it.
I really don't see what all the fuss is about mag pumps.
